With an 86 mph fastball and a 3.83 GPA, Cactus High School Senior Matt Tassinari has recently signed to attend the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on a baseball scholarship.
The Surprise resident finalized his decision to attend the Division I University on Nov. 9 with the help of the National Collegiate Scouting Association.
NCSA Recruiting Coach Deon Dinsmore said it has been a pleasure working with Mr. Tassinari.
"We are proud to work with a talented student-athlete like Matt Tassinari who will no doubt have a great future at UNLV, both on and off the field," Mr. Dinsmore said.
Mr. Tassinari is a three-time varsity starter and was also listed on the Cactus High School honor roll.
He says it is tough to keep up with athletics and academics, but it is all about setting priorities. "You have to keep your priorities straight and make sure you do all of your homework," Mr. Tassinari said.
The high school senior is relieved to have his post-graduation plans set and says he will continue to work hard and make an impact during his freshman year at UNLV.
His impression of the faculty and the campus, and its proximity to home, made the decision to attend the university easier for him.
"I really like the coaches," Mr. Tassinari said. "They have a really nice campus and facility, and it's only a five-hour drive."
Playing at UNLV, Mr. Tassinari says he will be facing off against some of the best competition in the country, and he looks forward to increasing his skills as a pitcher.
Currently, his goal is to finish his high school career on a high note by winning the state championship this year with the Cactus Cobras.
