Five of distinction
The National Collegiate Scouting Association Power Rankings are based on a university's U.S. News & World Report ranking of academic excellence, the U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup ranking of athletic strength and the NCAA student-athlete graduation rates. Association CEO Chris Krause gives us the top five Georgia colleges for 2007:
1. Emory. The Division III Eagles have muscle in athletics and academics. Both men's and women's tennis won the national championship, men's soccer ranks ninth nationally and volleyball is fifth. The school accepts only top-tier students.
2. Columbus State. Two senior basketball players were named to the 2007 Peach Belt all-conference teams for their second consecutive year. Coaches and professors place an importance on graduating their athletes.
3. Georgia College & State. Women's soccer (No. 4) and cross country (men ranked No. 2, women No. 4) have helped catapult GCSU.
4. Georgia Tech. Always has a strong showing in football and ranks as one of the best research schools in the nation.
5. Morehouse. Sent three premier student-athletes to the nation's top track and field meet.
