Working through the National Collegiate Scouting Association paid dividends for Crystal Lake Central’s J.J. Bobrowicz.
Southwest Minnesota State found the Tigers senior linebacker through that scouting service and set up an official visit to the NCAA Division II school in Marshall over the weekend.
Once Bobrowicz was on campus, he was sold.
Bobrowicz committed to Southwest coach Eric Eidsness on Monday and will sign his NCAA letter of intent Wednesday, the first day of the signing period for football.
“The coaches were great, and I really bonded with the players,” said Bobrowicz, who is 6-foot-3, 215 pounds. “I felt I could spend my five years there. I fell in love and decided to commit.”
Bobrowicz was a Northwest Herald All-Area first team selection as an offensive lineman, where he played part of the time. As the Tigers middle linebacker, Bobrowicz recorded 110 tackles.
“He’s a smart player who diagnoses things well,” Central coach Jon McLaughlin said. “When he gets [to the ballcarrier], he gets there with authority. He really did a good job scraping and clearing things up.”
Bobrowicz is the first player to sign a letter of intent – something done by those attending D-I or D-II schools that offer athletic scholarships – in McLaughlin’s five years as coach.
Bobrowicz said Southwest assistant coach Bret Atkins found his Web site from NCSA and called. Atkins visited Bobrowicz’s home and set up his official visit. Southwest offered Bobrowicz 50 percent to start with a chance of earning more as he contributed more.
“I’m excited for him,” McLaughlin said. “He gets a chance to follow his dreams and have fun doing something he loves to do.”
