Personal Statement

Regardless of collegiate division, I will play to my highest ability. I am coachable, always help my team, and will lead by example. I am not necessarily interested in playing at the "best" baseball school, as I seek to play a high level of baseball and earn a top academic education. Of course I am interested in playing baseball forever, for whatever time period that may come to mean.

I have played travel and school baseball for almost ten years in a competitive Southern California environment. My coaches have taught me respect for the game, and to combine my physical and mental abilities to be 'game smart'. For example, I may not be the fastest player on the field, but I have always been one of the very best base-runners and as a hitter I get on base and drive in runs. Opposing coaches describe my batting approach as, "Every pitch is a two strike pitch, for Evan." Defensively I can play anywhere on the baseball field, and make routine and extraordinary plays. I take my play very seriously, and am a quick learner. I have always 'stood out' on any baseball field, without trying to. I am a team first player.

My parents work hard and come from humble backgrounds. They are both self-made. My maternal grandparents education was 2nd and 3rd grade elementary school in a small Mexican town (Villa Guerrero, Jalisco, Mexico). From a family of nine brothers and sisters, my mother worked hard to help her family, and graduated medical school in the top 10% of her class, completed internship and social service (charity). My father's parent's did not graduate high school. As an adult, and while working full time at night as newspaper pressman at San Diego Union Tribune, Dad attended community college, then University of California at San Diego, and University of San Diego Law School. Mom and Dad both practice their professions today. My maternal grandfather, Ignacio Quiroz, who worked almost his entire life, lives full time with our family, and celebrated his 96th birthday just last month. Every day I take inspiration from my family, and work hard in school and baseball.

  • Stanford All Stars Camp, Session I, Primary position: 1b, Secondary position: OutfieldStanford All Star Evaluation Form Last Name: Trausch First Name: Evan Grad Year: 2016 High School:Torrey Pines Camp #26W Position: 1B/OF Camp Coach: Halstead Camp Coaches Notes: Offense: Evan has an outstanding smooth swing. He has incredible bat speed and is able to truly put back spin on a baseball. He does a good job staying through the baseball with a nice long follow through. Had numerous extra base hits and several hard line outs during the camp. As he progresses he can become better at identifying which pitches he can drive and which ones he cannot. Multiple at-bats Evan got out on the first pitch with weak contact. As he develops into a college hitter-to be the kind of middle of the order guy he should be-he will need to have a great approach to match the pretty swing. Don’t let pitchers get you out on their pitches. Identify what you drive well-get that pitch-then go to work. Defense: Evan is a solid 1B- he is athletic and works around the bag well. He is a little tall when fielding ground balls so can work on getting lower. He has soft hands and good feet. His arm strength isn’t outstanding but was very accurate with all of his throws. As an OF Evan has some work to do. He did not show great range to the baseball-he is not slow-but got poor reads and took too long to get into top speed. Didn’t appear comfortable on ground balls to him. I think from an athletic stand point he could be a corner outfielder for you but needs some serious work out there. Camp Coach Grade: 7/8- Currently Evan has the physical tools that make him a very good H.S. hitter who should play at a 4 year college. How soon he plays and whether he becomes an 8 is predicated on increasing his strength even more, but also developing a great approach at the plate. If he can demonstrate patience and making sure he gets a pitch he can drive he would be considered an 8 to me or an Exceptional H.S. ability and a guy depending the level of college should play very early in his career.
