Personal Statement
While many things have influenced me in my life, nothing has influenced me more than the game of baseball. Growing up, I loved to watch the Oakland A’s play. Players like Jason Giambi, Eric Chavez, and Bobby Crosby were my heroes. It also helped my grandpa and dad loved baseball. I also grew to love baseball because baseball was a sport where height didn’t matter. In my pre-teen years, people always compared me to my father, who was 6’3, 270 lbs, however I remained short and skinny. However, seeing players like Jose Altuve perform at his height increased my love for the game, and boosted my confidence. When I watched Altuve on TV, I said to myself, “If he can do it, I can do it.”
Baseball taught me hard work pays off, and if you put in the work and trust in God, you will see results. While my doctors have given me hope saying I am just a late bloomer, I didn’t let being an underdeveloped player stop me. Being a late-bloomer, I don't have the developed body most baseball players do, but I didn't let that stop me. Even though other players were more developed and had more talent than me, I just kept working hard. I am a firm believer in the saying, “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard.”
It is my dream and ultimate goal is to attend a college or university, and continue to play the sport that I love for that school. Academically, I would like to go school and study in the field of Communications, and athletically I would like to be left-handed pitcher. For me, going to college reminds me of Superman. You see, Superman has a day job, but he takes on a different role at night (Superman also worked in the field of communications by writing in a newspaper!). I want to be a baseball Superman where I can study by day and strike batters out at night.
