Personal Statement

My name is William Kahiapopo’ohala Bisho. My friends and family call me “Kahi.” My Hawaiian middle name means “the first born to carry on family values and traditions”. I am the 4th generation to be named William. My last name, Bisho is Portuguese. I am from Honolulu, Hawaii.

My great-grandfather William (Sonny) played baseball on a semi-pro team (the Hawaii Braves) against visiting pro teams to entertain the troops in Hawaii during WWII.

My grandfather William (Bernard) played high school baseball and basketball and walked on to play football at Boise JC. He then played football and baseball at Whittier. He played volleyball on a national ARMY team during Vietnam War.

My dad William (Chris) played football, basketball and baseball in high-school and played football at BYU. He still coaches high school football and has encouraged me to play as many sports as possible.

I have grown up playing baseball, basketball and football and have enjoyed them all. I played point guard on the JV basketball, and played quarterback and slot for our JV football team. I was brought up to the varsity baseball team as a pitcher during my freshman year. I quickly realized how important skill development; conditioning and training are for each sport. It is hard to train for three different sports at the same time. Each one takes continuous effort and focus.

I have made my decision and am fully committed to baseball, 100%.

A middle school assembly sparked my interest in surf photography. I became friends with the speaker and he eventually became a mentor to me. I have shown my work in an exhibit and have been sponsored by surf organizations.

When not working out or playing ball, which isn’t often, I spend time at the beach with my camera. I am working part time this summer on a tour boat taking pictures of tourists swimming with dolphins and turtles. My summer schedule is flexible and lets me work on days I don't have practice or games.

Baseball is my passion. Photography calms my soul and keeps me in balance.

My dad and my grandmother are both teachers and urge me to do my best. On a normal day I get up at 6 AM and go the weight room at school to lift and workout. I have class all day and then go to practice. It is dark when I get home to eat, do homework and sleep.

My school, Punahou, is a K-12 school with very high standards. My family is supportive of my activities and interests and I have a great relationship with my teachers and coaches.

At this time I am thinking about a career in law enforcement, possibly FBI.
