Baseball is a sport that I really enjoy. As I sat down and thought about the motto of “Respect and Discipline”, I thought that these are two words that will be very helpful throughout my four years of High School and College. Each word requires commitment, practice, and effort. I like the fact that my high school baseball team has codes of conduct to follow because it teaches self-discipline and self-respect. I have chosen three principles that I believe to be beneficial to my success in High School and beyond.
The first principle is to arrive one hour before game time for warm-ups. This principle encouraged me to be on time for my classes in High School. I believe that tardiness is unacceptable in the real world. It is very important to be timely because it will show respect to my teachers, my classmates, and future employer. It also makes me responsible and dependable.
The second principle is to try my best at every practice and game, striving to improve skill and being a part of a “Team”. To me, this principal is extremely important. I believe that it is essential for me to do my best. If I want to have four years of success in college, I must always strive to do my best. I know that I must be organized, structured, and focused so that I can be successful in all of my classes. This principle encourages me to be the best me that I can be. It is also important that I stay focused while improving my academic abilities. When I work on my craft, it seems as if I get better on the field so I know that when I work on my class work, I will improve on my academic skills.
Thirdly, display good sportsmanship to all teammates; respect all teammates, coaches and adults. This is another principle that is very important. I think that everyone should strive to get along and work together as a team. When I work with my baseball teammates, it shows good sportsmanship and great teamwork. In college, I will face numerous people, different personalities, attitudes, feelings, etc. Everyone is different and I realize that I must respect my classmates, the teachers, administration, and my parents. I believe that if you give respect, you will get respect. I also believe that I will meet nice friends because if I’m kind to others, they will be kind to me.
I am so glad that the game of baseball has instilled these principles in the players. Since I have been a baseball player, I have valued honesty, loyalty, respect, sportsmanship and discipline among the players and the coaches. I am grateful that I will be able to take these characteristics with me throughout my college years, as well as, throughout life. I thank my coaches, teammates, parents, and of course my higher power for making such a positive deposit in my life!
