Personal Statement
Growing up as one of the smallest kids in my class and having type 1 diabetes, I know what it's like to deal with doubters. These obstacles in my life have made me more driven to be the best I can possibly be.
As a small kid, I was always the kid who barely made it on the B team and started the season as the last man off the bench. However, in most cases, less than a month into the season, I climbed up the lineup and found myself as the closer on the team. This has helped me become very resilient. This mindset led me to being the best player I can be as I found new ways to make myself successful. I apply this mindset both on the field and in the classroom as it has helped me throughout life.
When I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at 12 years old, I didn't initially realize how much it would help prepare me for the rest of my life. Through diabetes, I've learned how to manage my diet, body and other aspects that aren't teachable in a high school health class. I've never viewed diabetes as a disease, but more of a challenge that has helped me prepare for life.
After an injury-plagued season when I was 14, I did not play baseball during my freshman year. Spending a year away from the thing I love the most was disappointing for me. When I returned for my sophomore season, I used that difficult experience to my advantage. I was mentally and physically stronger, leading to many tangible improvements on the field. I worked towards becoming stronger and more focused. I was no longer the small, skinny kid on the team but instead a leader. This increase in confidence will help me both academically and athletically, which will allow me to flourish in my college career and beyond.
I began throwing submarine after injuring my arm. As a submarine pitcher, I have unique movement that results in strikes, and easy ground balls. Although I lack in velocity compared to over the top pitchers, I am able to maintain a low ERA and get my team out of tough situations.
As a closer, I've always loved the challenges presented by the role. I have excelled in the toughest of these circumstances. In places where many pitchers would find stress, I have always stayed calm, no matter the situation.
I look forward to finding a college team where I can contribute my unique talents.
