Personal Statement
My name is Joey Byers. I’m a junior at Streator Township High School. I play 3 sports, baseball, basketball, and soccer, all at the varsity level. My focus is on continuously improving in my academics and baseball. Since I was 7 years old, baseball has been my true sports love. The desire to be the best and my will to win is what drives me. At the age of 12, I experienced my first great baseball achievement when my Little League team won the Illinois State Championship which then gave me the opportunity to be the starting pitcher televised on ESPN in the regional semi-final game. As a freshman, I played with the JV team and then progressed to the varsity level my Sophomore year. As a varsity player I play as a pitcher and a shortstop. While playing these positions, I have gained strong leadership qualities and the ability to drive my teammates to become better players.
I’m currently enrolled in advanced placement college courses to help prepare me for college. Outside of sports and academics, I work on getting physically stronger. I also help my younger siblings become the best possible athletes they can be by working with them. My current goal is to become a successful college student athlete at a school where I can pursue a degree while being fortunate enough to get to play the game that I truly love.
