Personal Statement
My name is David Thomas. My goal is to play the best baseball I can because I love the game. I continually work hard on all my tools and in game mentality.
I am 6’ 3” and about 200 lbs and currently a freshman at Deerfield Academy in Western Massachusetts. I've always been good in the classroom Math and science come natural to me, but I'm picking up history as one of my successful classes. My SSAT score was 2118 for high school application
At Deerfield my baseball coach is Steven August. I play football and basketball during fall and winter. I’ve played with NorCal Baseball during the summer since 2014 under Coach Rob Bruno. In the past two years, I have also represented Northern California in USA Baseball’s NTIS in NC. I also was selected as an All American representing Northwestern region in USSSA tournaments in FL.
I am primarily a shortstop but often move to third base. I also pitch. On the infield, my strongest tool is my arm. However, a Perfect Game evaluator stated in an article that I showed “solid actions and footwork” and also mentioned that I made “clean transfers.” I was one of the top prospects ranked by PG even though I was one of the youngest at the showcase.
Pitching in that showcase I threw a steady 80 mph, but I know I can throw harder as I get stronger and better coordinated through my growth. A few weeks later I was clocked at 84 in Cary, NC. I also throw a curveball, splitter, and changeup as off-speed. I was starting pitcher and third baseman at Head Royce during middle school. I was the captain of the team and received the Coach's Award in my eighth grade year.
At the plate, I apply a gap-to-gap approach with a slightly open stance and small leg-kick. In the past 3 years, I have worked heavily on using the lower half of my body and keeping the barrel through the zone as long as possible. The same Perfect Game evaluator added that the “ball comes off [my bat] nicely.”
I'll continue to work hard and make it a career that is worth your consideration.
