Personal Statement

My name is David Capobianco. I am a 6 foot, 185 pound, left handed pitcher from Raynham, Massachusetts. Like most baseball players, my goal is to play college baseball and then move onto professional baseball. There's a lot of things that separate me from other ball players and recruits. I am one of the most self-motivated players that will participate in your program. I have an enormous drive and passion for baseball. I wake up at 4:30 a.m. before school and work out, then work out again after school. I keep my work outs creative and changing to strengthen the key muscle groups that I need to pitch. I push myself to the max and attempt to break my mental and physical limits. I work hard physically, but am a very mentally active player. My coaches over the years have always acknowledged the mental aspect of my game. I observe and understand the game and take it all in then use it to my advantage. I dissect hitters' swings and their placement in the box. I recall sequences of pitches and attack the weaknesses of hitters. I keep a notebook and am always writing things down to go over a game, remember something I need to work on or to chart my progress. I have read numerous books on the mental game of baseball. I am always doing something to improve as a pitcher and baseball player. I watch hundreds of videos on pro pitchers. I look for new exercises and stretches and ways to keep my body and arm healthy and improve something each and every day. You can count the seconds on one hand that I'm not thinking about baseball throughout the day. Academically I slacked my freshmen and sophomore year. I didn't focus on my studies or put in the work. Understanding the importance of academics, I have made the changes needed to succeed in the classroom. So far, my Junior year grades are all A's and B's and I have a 3.4 Junior year GPA. I go to private tutoring twice a week as well as extra help after school and take ACT and SAT prep courses. I am willing to put in the time and work to not let my grades negatively effect my future. As a kid, I was diagnosed with Tourette's  Syndrome. This effected me in school and outside of school. I would constantly twitch my head and blink my eyes and shake my hands, etc. I have two older brothers who loved to beat me up and I also played hockey. This made me tougher and helped me stand up for myself. I never backed down from someone trying to pick on me. Having Tourette's has also made me mentally tough. I have gained self control from dealing with it and a better sense of maturity. I found myself dealing with adversity many times in my life. This has helped me build character. I am thankful for my Tourette's because I've been able to associate with a wider span of individuals. Even though I spend most of my time around athletes who share similar personalities, I find myself able to connect with others who struggle with something that may make them a little different. Some of my motivation to pursue a professional baseball career is so I can give back and help kids who struggle with similar obstacles as myself. The character and maturity I have built from my experiences have reflected themselves on the mound. When things aren't going my way I don't sob in the moment, but keep composed and optimistic and make the necessary adjustments to positively effect the outcome. I learn from failure. Within all of the adversity from this, I find that being on the mound is the one place in the world where my mind, body, and spirit are at ease and it feels like it"s exactly where I am supposed to be. I am a leader through my actions and work ethic. I am very coachable and open to advice and criticism, but don't just stand there and nod my head. I like to have an active conversation with a coach where we can both share ideas and give feedback on different things. I think this helps me understand and better myself as a player, as well as show the coach that I understand what he is saying or trying to teach or show me. I am a straight forward, honest, put-my-head-down-and-work-hard kind of guy and live to play baseball. I hope that any coaches who take the time to read this get a feel for me and how I may fit into their program.
