Personal Statement

Hi, my name is Jackson Gregory, and I am a baseball player. I am a student, player, and fan of the game.

I have dreamed of playing college baseball, and I have worked into making it a reality.  I have made great gains physically and mentally, this past year, and have matured into a leader on my team. I am looking for a baseball program and coaching staff that shares my goals and passion for baseball. I am rapidly developing into an elite player. I have worked hard, and it has paid off. I want to continue that development.

I have been hitting a baseball for as long as I remember. I have played organized baseball since I was four years old. The game is special to me.  I have always tried to be around the game, as much as I possibly could, to feed my passion. I volunteer at a local batting cage, and teach kids to dream, believe, and practice hard. I enjoy working with younger players. Their successes feed my passion.  When I was eight, I started to understand what this game was; I was a bat boy for an American Association team in my hometown.  I saw those guys practice and play everyday, and I loved it.  It ignited my passion, and they would help me, and I loved them for it.  Jimmy was their shortstop and taught me how to field a ground ball. Mark, the first baseman, would practice hitting with me.  It made me want to keep playing, continue to work hard, and to help others enjoy the game.

I am self-starter, and I work hard academically and athletically.  I am constantly in the cage and the books to better my student/athlete skills.  I get to school at 6:00 a.m. to lift weights, with my basketball coach. He has helped me push past what I thought I was capable of. In the last eighteen months, with the help of all my coaches, I have physically and mentally transformed.  I have grown four inches, but I have also grown into the athlete I dreamed of being.  I have increased my strength and stamina. I play varsity basketball on one of the top teams in the State.  I was voted captain of the high school baseball team.  We will have a very strong team my senior year.  I look for my teammates and I to be extremely competitive. I expect a breakout year and to play in the State Championship.

I have grown into a leader, and I have embraced that role and responsibility. I was selected to be in Student Leadership and a mentor at my high school and I was captain on my baseball team as a junior. I maintain a 4.3 GPA in the honors program, and I am in the top ten-percent of my class.

I have overcome many obstacles already in my career. Being underestimated as a student and a player has taught me to work for everything and to take nothing for granted.  I didn't make the opening day varsity roster, my sophomore year, but I continued to work and grind and eventually I got put on halfway through the year and contributed to our teams late season success and run at the State Championship.

Thank you for taking the time to consider me for your program.

  • Jackson is a tall, strong (62, 190lbs) two-way player who works hard and improves every time he steps on the field. He can swing it at the dish with bat speed and barrel accuracy to hit the ball hard to all fields and make himself a tough out. He is fluid in his mechanics, getting in time with his front foot to whip the bat through the zone with strong hands. His lower half works well and he gets on plane early to make consistent, hard contact from gap to gap. At first, he works well around the bag with efficient footwork to present a good target. He has soft hands and presents them to field, dictating hops and goes to the backhand with ease. On the bump, he features a fastball, curveball mix with control to work around the plate. He shows a strong front side and a clean arm stroke to get the most out of his offerings and present difficult pitches to hitters. Staying in line to the plate will open up his forward arm swing and result in more action on his pitches. Jackson is an intriguing prospect we look forward to watching during his senior campaign.

  • Feedback from our coaches: First of all, he got better every day. He worked his butt off and is very coachable. Based on how good we think his swing is now, we are actually going to improve his class rating to a “Class 5” (Previously “Class 6”). We think his target list of schools should include D2, and Junior College programs. If looking D1, we would target smaller schools in the Midwest or Northeast for the best chance. At the plate, the biggest recommendation is to hit the strength and conditioning programs hard. The swing projects, but at 1B we will want to see him continue to get stronger. BP and drill work should consist of REPEATING that good swing, not changing things. Our coaches think we’re just scratching the surface of his potential…really depends on the work Jackson keeps putting in. He’s got very good aptitude for the game.
