Personal Statement
My name is Jake Mellor. I am 6'3'' and 205lbs. Currently my fastball is 86 mph and I run the 60 yard dash in 6.9 seconds. I am a junior at East Greenwich High School in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. I transferred to East Greenwich High School from Bishop Hendricken High School in Warwick, Rhode Island between my sophomore and junior year. I have a 3.5 GPA in both Honors and Early Enrollment College courses. I am dedicated to the game of baseball as well as furthering my education at a school that will be the right fit for me, both academically and athletically.
Throughout my baseball career, I have been very successful with the help of my family, coaches and teammates. I was a member of the winning team for the 10 year old Little League State Championship both as a pitcher and infielder. In that same year, my team represented the state of Rhode Island in the Eastern Regional Tournament in Cranston, Rhode Island where I hit fourth in the lineup. Although we did not win the tournament, as a pitcher I had a 2 win, 0 loss record. I have also participated in The RI Babe Ruth State Championship as a 14 year old, placing 3rd in New England and again hitting forth in the lineup. Playing for the Rhode Island Rays AAU Team, we won two AAU New England Championships, one as an 11 year old team in 2011, and the second as a 14 year old team in 2013. Our 2013 AAU Team participated in the AAU Nationals, finishing 3rd in the United States. On this team, I pitched a winning game as well as played infield and outfield. As a freshman at Bishop Hendricken High School, our team participated in the Rhode Island Interscholastic League High School State Championship coming in 2nd place. As a sophomore at Bishop Hendricken High School, our team won the Rhode Island State Championship. I participated on this team as a RHP as well as an infielder and outfielder. During the season, I pitched 4 wins as a starting pitcher, with a batting average of over 300.
As far as summer baseball is concerned, I was a member of the Rhode Island Prospects and Rhode Island Connie Mack (Bishop Hendricken) in 2015. This upcoming summer (2016) I am beginning to train with Rhode Island Tides and will be participating in various tournaments throughout this upcoming summer including the Perfect Game tournament in Georgia.
I believe firmly that character is everything both on and off the field and want to be part of an athletic program where integrity and hard work pay off. I can attribute my success thus far to my hard work and determination but at the same time, I have been fortunate enough to have a family that instills a healthy work ethic and strong moral values, coaches that have shown me the joy of winning and the importance of losing and teammates that cheer each other on and don't give up even under the worst conditions. I am always looking to improve my baseball skills, but what most sets me apart from others, is that I thrive in crisis situations with the game on the line. Throughout my career, I have delivered in the clutch and my previous game history can attest to that. Always composed on the mound, in the field, or at the plate no matter what the situation, I constantly strive to be successful. All in all, my strengths are consistently working to the best of my ability and possessing a healthy competitiveness in the classroom as well as on the field.
I appreciate you taking the time to read my personal statement, and good luck in the upcoming baseball season.
