Personal Statement

I’m Gerald Jeston Smith, I go by Jeston. I have a few nicknames that family and friends call me, in which I don’t mind going by them either…Jet, Tack, Jetty. I will be a 2019 graduate of Slaton High School, Slaton Texas. I am a 5’5”, 145lbs athlete. I have been playing sports since I was 5 years old. That is where it all started. Playing on the T-Ball team, when I was 6, I played on a little dribblers basketball team, and then when I was 7, I played YFL; I have not stopped since. I have always enjoyed competing in sports. Currently, I am fortunate enough to attend a small school where I can play all sports. I am a QB, Wide Receiver, Safety, and Corner in football, a Point Guard in Basketball, and I play outfield and did some pitching for the Baseball team in which I received 2nd team all district outfielder as a sophomore, and as a junior I received 1st team all district outfielder, and ran the relays in track.

Although I compete in all sports, baseball has always been my passion. I come from a baseball back ground. My grandfather; in which, I never had the pleasure of meeting, played in the Negro League for a few years. I would say that is where my passion for the game came from. One of my travel ball coaches once told me that I have a God given talent and once I realize it, I could play baseball for a long time. Since then, playing baseball in college has been a dream; a goal of mine.

Participating in sports has always been my “saving grace”, my refuge. When I was 7 years old, adversity struck. I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, my motto: Diabetes didn’t stop me; it just took my snickers away. Having to deal with this disease at an early age, taught me responsibility, perseverance, and determination. I know that I can bring those attributes along with many others; not only athletically, but academically as well. Above all, I would love to be given the opportunity to contribute to a winning team in college and to succeed as a college student.

  • Jeston is an athletic and strong 2019 OF prospect that worked hard and made several adjustments throughout the week at Pirate City. In the OF, Jeston anticipates the ball off the bat and covers a lot of ground. He has a strong arm and makes accurate throws. Continuing to work on first step quickness and working behind the ball will allow him to be in a better position to throw. At the plate, Jeston is in an athletic stance, loads his hands back into the drive position, and stays balanced through contact. He creates backside rotation, has fast hands, and shows pull side pop. Attacking the inside part of the ball will allow him to shorten his swing and keep the barrel on plane more consistently. Jeston will continue to improve with experience and we hope to see his progress in the future.

  • 03/04/2018 - College PREP - Plainview (Lubbock), TX Jeston is an athletic OF who has a bright future on the diamond. Foot speed is excellent as indicated by his 60 time of 6.84. In the OF, he displays smooth/clean actions. He utilizes his feet well in tracking down balls through proper routes/angles. He works to get behind balls and plays through with momentum to his target. Range is a plus as he reads balls well off the bat and covers a lot of ground. Throws are accurate but will benefit by building more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, he shows a squared setup. Hands are quick and work through an aggressive approach. He makes hard contact and stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields with gap-to-gap pop. Jeston has a lot of potential with time and room to progress his game.
