Personal Statement
My name is Ben Gooch and I am an incoming senior on The Woodlands Varsity team. As a sophomore I was promoted to varsity and contributed to the 2013 5A Texas State Championship, and as a junior was one of only two underclassmen starters. I played both shortstop and center field during the 2014 season, and helped lead my team to the district championship - in a very competitive league. Our team also earned a spot on the USA Today top 50 during the playoffs.
I maintain a 3.7 GPA and have a desire to attend a selective university with a good business school. I am 6'0", 180 pounds and have both foot speed (6.65 sixty) and developing arm strength (infield velocity 86, outfield 87). My athletic versatility is an asset, and I am willing to support my team by playing where I can make the best contribution.
Playing baseball in Texas provides me the opportunity to compete at the highest level, and has prepared me well to play at the next level. Among Texas high schools The Woodlands is consistently ranked the top three athletically, and has won the Lone Star Cup award multiple years for being the top high school sports program in the state.
I have been taught attitude and work ethic are the most important character traits in this game and I commit myself everyday to leaving everything on the field. I never take the game or my team for granted and I strive to be successful every play, and every at bat. My work ethic on and off the field is testimony to my example as a leader, and as a third year varsity player I will use my experience to be a leader in the dugout.
In closing, I bring the right combination of leadership and athleticism to make a contribution on a competitive college team, and look forward to learning about your school and baseball program.
