My name is William "Carlton" Redd Jr. I will be a 2018 graduate.I would like to attend a four year college, majoring in Forensic Science, while playing on the school's college baseball team. I believe that I would be a good candidate for the team because I am a pitcher and I have also played second base. I am focusing more on my pitching rather than second base. I hope to be a pitcher only in college. I enjoy playing baseball on my current travel ball team, the Carolina Titans. The team had seen me playing on another travel ball team three years ago, noticed my playing ability, and asked me to join their team in preparation for their planned attendance to Cooperstown Dreams Park the following year. The team has faced a great deal of competition, which to me, has only made me a better player. We have traveled to Cooperstown, New York; Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and Elizabethtown, Kentucky as well as playing in local tournaments from March to November every year. This past year, after working hard on my own during the off-season, I made the JV high school baseball team my freshman year. I was a middle reliever for my high school baseball team and I later became a starting pitcher as the season progressed. My pitching is my strong point, which I believe will help out a college team. My pitching arsenal includes fastball (two seam and four seam), curve ball, slider, and knuckle ball. My knuckle ball has a lot of movement. My arm slot is straight over the top and when I throw I keep my hand hidden behind my back, blocking the view of the ball until the last second, making it difficult for hitters to pick up the ball early. My ability to throw these pitches well and continuing to hone my skills will make me a valuable part of the team. My experience playing for a travel team has taught me teamwork, respect for coaches and players, good sportsmanship, morals, and a growing love for the game. Baseball is more than just a sport to me, it is life. I also enjoy the camaraderie of my fellow teammates and coaches.
I have recently started practicing and playing with the Virginia Reds from Danville, Virginia. The Carolina Titans have taken a break from playing, so I have looked to this team for an opportunity to play baseball throughout the Fall. The team will be playing in showcase camps at colleges all throughout the season.
The fall season has just came to an end for the Virginia Reds. Our last tournament was in Myrtle beach where I pitched a complete game shutout, which helped our team become the number one seed for that tournament, I will be spending my offseason working out and will be participating in a velocity program to help further my pitching abilities.
Over the winter I am participating in a velocity program, the name of the program is DriveLine baseball. I decided to do this program to help me overall as a pitcher. I have already completed half of the program, and I have already seen a 2-3 mph increase in my velocity. I lok forward to the great results at the end of this program. Along with this program, I am lifting weights and going to camps over the winter. I can not wait for the spring and the start of a new high school season!
I am also on the varsity cross country team for my high school. I am the number three runner for the team. My fastest time was 19:40. I started to run cross country because I wanted to become faster in baseball. I have seen dramatic changes in my speed from running cross country.
I am currently enrolled in all honors core classes and am taking Spanish as well. My current math class is Calculus, which puts me well ahead of other students in my grade. I am a honor roll student and a member of the National Junior Honor Society. I have been able to maintain my grades while still playing practicing and playing baseball on the weekends. Just as it takes practice to maintain and improve your ability in baseball, hard work and studying is required to succeed in academics. While I hope to have a career in baseball, I am also pursuing a career in Forensic Science.
In addition to academics and baseball, I am a active member of my church and serve as an acolyte. I have also recently attended at cyber camp at my high school over the summer.
I look forward to a college career, and feel I would be a great asset to the team and the university.
