Michael Sayegh, NCSA Student Athlete: Football in Canada
July 22nd, 2008 - by– by Michael Sayegh 2011 Football Grad
Just about 2 months ago I took part in one of Football University mini camps. It was an amazing experience. I learn a lot about footwork, throwing mechanics, reading the defense and much more. It was extremely beneficial for many reasons. One of which is obviously the fact that it helped me improve as a quarterback. But more importantly, it helped me gain confidence. As a Canadian, it’s not everyday that you can go compare yourself to other superb quarterbacks yet here, at an invitation only camp, you go throw for throw with amazing quarterbacks from all ages. It was an incredible experience that I look forward to participating in again next year.
I also have recently begun a weight training program that has already shown an effect. My body is more toned; I am more confident with my arm strength and feel more powerful when performing any physical activity. Just to show proof by numbers, my bench max has gone up by 20 pounds.
In Canada, football is run a little differently. Therefore, since the beginning of July my team has began practicing regularly because our season starts earlier than the one in the United States. The season starts typically about a week into August.
In addition, I just recently attended the try-out camp for the U17 QBFL Elites and was selected to be part of the team. The U17 QBFL Elites is the all-star team of the Quebec Bantam Football League (QBFL) and this all-star team takes part in the Challenge Wilson. This is a tournament between 8 teams across Quebec and all of which are all star teams of their respective leagues.
Presently I am just trying to become the best Quarterback possible and have successful 2008 season. Hopefully this in itself will give me exposure to different universities but I am sure with the help of NCSA and me attending a few combines and camps this upcoming year the exposure will come.
