Start Your Engines

August 25th, 2008 - by Rick McDole

Two a days are coming to a close. And if you are like me, you’re excited to get back to single sessions. For most high school students the school year has either started or will soon. Eventually every one will be looking forward to that first night of Friday lights. You’ll look around and you’ll notice the stands starting to fill. At the concession stand younger kids play as parents buy items from the stand. The band is playing, as you focus back in you’ll continue to wrap up warm ups for the first game of what will be exciting Lightsseason for you and you team mates. As a player it’s clear what you want to do. Win. As a recruit you may be asking yourself what should I be doing?

First things first, get on the field. Coaches recruit the most talented players in their areas. They want to see you compete against the best, and in order to do that you need to be on the varsity stage. This is the easiest way to jump start your recruiting season. Get on the field in any way you can. Do not make the mistake of taking for granted the impact you can make on special teams. Think Devin Hester, and then work to be that kind of game changer.

Second, remember to get off to a fast start. Seniors especially. In most cases coaches are waiting for early game film from this season. The last thing you are going to want to do is explain to a coach that you were still “knocking rust off” in the third game of the season. If you still have preseason practices left, remember to use them to polish up your game. Look clean and crisp at the beginning of the year and you will stand out. Juniors, remember coaches can start to contact you this season. Most staffs will be beginning to put together notes and files on their underclass recruits. Being able to provide solid game film at the beginning of the year can really help file out your file in a good way.

Lastly, have fun. Whatever level, whatever sport, whatever level of involvement, have fun this year and remember to stay relaxed and play your game and you’re going to have a great year.
