Updated facilities are great, but not the only factor for college recruiting

I wrote a post last month about how facilities can play a large role in improving a school’s recruitment efforts. Ian McCaw, the Athletic Director for Baylor University (Tex.), would agree.
The Bears’ $34 million Alwin O. and Dorothy Highers Athletics and Academic Complex (rendering above) is nearing completion, and Baylor hopes to be able to recruit with the big boys. From The Lariat Online, Baylor’s student newspaper:
However, the largest advantage will be for recruiting. With Texas’ prestige, Texas A&M University’s history and the University of Oklahoma’s appeal, Baylor’s spot on the recruiting rankings has lagged. The new facility should change that.
As of Friday, 13 high school seniors have verbally committed to Baylor.
“It will allow Baylor to recruit to what traditionally hasn’t been a strength,” McCaw said.
Something that I left out from the last post – you shouldn’t decide on a school just because of their facilities. I stand by my previous notion that updated facilities are a good indicator of the state of the program, but there are more important factors to consider about a school than how nice of a gym or field they have.
So Baylor probably is experiencing a rise in recruits because of the new facility, but hopefully, that isn’t the only reason why.
