Be realistic with your post-college expectations

I came across this tremendous post from a gentleman named Kyle Robarts, an athletics graduate assistant from Abilene Christian University. It’s a paper he wrote from his Introduction to Student Affairs course that talks about how much more important going to college for a degree is than for athletic awards. An excerpt:

… I would hope that coaches and teachers alike, once these students enter their doors would convey the individual athlete’s potential that extends beyond the playing field or court. I would hope that the faculty and staff would help the hopeful athletic participants realize that there’s a great chance that the university can provide alternatives to help them be successful once their athletic careers end.

Because for the vast majority of student-athletes in college, their athletic career will end after graduation. It’s like the NCAA ad campaign — most NCAA student-athletes go pro in something other than sports.

I’ve probably written something like this before, but it’s definitely worth writing again.

Your sport is a great way to get to college, but college isn’t a great way just to get to keep playing your sport.
