Amanda Apgar, NCSA Student Athlete: A Week in the Life

 10/13 Blog:

It’s officially Fall, my favorite season of the year, and that means homecoming, football…and, best of all, it means that high school basketball is a mere 3 weeks away!  This is week #8 of school and that also means that next week is finals week.  I can’t believe Term 1 is almost behind me and how fast my junior year seems to be passing by.  Here’s what’s been going on…

10/14 College Info:

I just got home from attending my first college orientation (Pepperdine).  There have been a few given at my school, but they seem to happen during a class period I haven’t been able to miss…Physics!!  This particular session was held in the evening at a local hotel and was really helpful.  I got real insight as to what they were looking for in their students, where I might fit in, and the areas I might want to work on.  With SAT’s just a couple of months away, I now have a firmer goal in mind after listening to their college rep fill in the blanks.  I feel I’m on target with my academics, and now I am just looking forward to going to a lot more of these!

10/16 NCSA Updates:

I’ve been updating my profile and adding new contacts to my call sheet.  I noticed after posting my first video, the responses seem to come in a lot quicker.  New video just got mailed to NCSA this week and hopefully my second video will generate some new opportunities too.  It’s been exciting to make contact with colleges and even more exciting making contact with coaches and staff directly.  I’m still making calls, filling out questionnaires, and sending emails-communication is the best tool out there!

10/17 Varsity Golf:

I tried a new sport this year…golf.  Playing on the golf team has been such a positive experience.  It allowed me to meet a whole new group of friends, and take a chance on sport that taught me discipline and a whole new kind of focus.  The fact that golf runs at a completely different speed than basketball was what also attracted me to it.  I relearned patience, determination, and that practice does make perfect (or at least equals improvement!); traits that I will be taking with me to basketball this year, and that will not only make me a better teammate, but a reliable and capable leader on the court.

10/20 Varsity Basketball:

Basketball conditioning has been officially underway now for the last month.  There have been many new girls who have come out.  Some of the younger girls seem a little intimidated and unsure of themselves, and this is where I will put my leadership qualities to the test.  Finding acceptance and assistance on my golf team made the experience even more enjoyable.  And, that made me work even harder, something I hope to instill in some of the girls coming into our basketball program for the first time.

10/21 The End of One Season and the Beginning of Another:

I have my final golf match today and the hard work seems to be paying off!  I moved up from 6th place to 3rd place on my team, and feel pretty good about my progress overall this season.  Though I never played before this, I’m looking forward to being a part of the team next year too.

….next up:  BASKETBALL TRYOUTS!
