High School Coaches

October 31st, 2008 - by Ryan Newman

When I was in eigth-grade and attending my brother’s football banquet at the high school I would end up attending, I heard the head coach say something very interesting to me at the time.  “My number one job is to get your son into college, and playing football”.  It never occurred to me at that young of age, that a coach would aid in this process, I thought it was kind of cool.  Well over the course of my next four years in school I learned the hard way that this wasn’t true, that he didn’t help at all.  Not just for me, but for dozens of other college prospects, that ended up just going to state school, or a community college.

I do not blame my coach for not helping, I blame him for saying that he would help.  There are so many duties for these coaches, that it is very difficult to help in this process.  Imagine this for a second, you have to get up at 6:00 AM and go and teach a class for 8 hours.  Then you have to run a practice for another 2.  Then you have to plan practice, go over film, and do strategies prep with the other coaches for the upcoming game-another two hours.  After that you have to plan your agenda for tomorrow’s classes/grade papers/etc 2-3 hours.  All this while trying to find time for your family.  Oh yeah, and you should help a handful to a dozen players try to get recruited, while putting your reputation on the line for the kids.

What I’m saying is don’t count on the coach, they wear so many hats, college recruiting aid, should not be one.  It’s your son or daughter’s future not theirs!
