Increasing Your Chance for Scholarship in the Weightroom Part II

October 31st, 2008 - by Ryan Newman

Last week I introduced the topic of working out for motion rather than muscle.  This week I want to go into further detail about simple changes in your workout to make it more athlete friendly.

Instead of:  Seated anything (shoulder Press, Tricep Extension, etc.)

Do: Standing up____

Why: Sports are played on your feet (for the most part).

Instead of:  Concentrating on Bench Press

Do:  Incline Bench Press

Why:  Sports are played low, bent knees, sometimes a bent back (at some angle), you are rarely required to push somebody standing straight up, at least incline bench puts you at an angle

Instead of: Lat Pulldown

Do: Pullups or Chinups

Why: Body weight exercises not only put you through a wider range of motion, but they also activate more smaller stabilizer muscles

Instead of: Back Squat

Do: Front Squat

Why: When having the weight on your shoulders it forces you to keep your back upright, and thus you utilize muscles you are trying to incorporate in the lift (legs, butt)
