NFL Scouts are Digging Deeper into Smaller Colleges

December 11th, 2008 - by Marko Markovic

When high school student athletes look to take their sport further than college, they start looking at programs that are D-IA, known now as the FCS for football. They look at schools that pump out the most talent onto the NFL. They always start looking at the larger schools.

This is where I think a lot of student athletes make their mistakes. Many miss out on other opportunities like D-IAA(FBS) or DII and DIII. If every student athlete took the time, to check out NFL team rosters, they will notice that not every player is from a D-IA school. For example, Joe Flacco who is the rookie QB for the Ravens played at Delaware. Terrell Owens played at Chattanooga. Tony Romo played at Eastern Illinois, and that combination right there is one of the best in the NFL! For example Coach Bob Chmiel told me that Indiana St.(D-IAA) only has like somewhere between 30-40 guys on that roster. From what I understand the Sycamores offer athletic scholarships.

Look, I can go on and keep on listing all the players, but I’m not saying that a student athlete can’t make strides to complete his or her dreams. All I am saying is take a look at other options. Make a safety net around you so that if those dreams do not become a reality, you are making sure enough that you are still playing the sport you love. Making sure you are not missing out on the boat from potentially playing your sport in college.

Next week I will be talking about Miguel Marshall, a 2009 stud athlete out of Virginia. Stay tuned for that next week. Here is the article from rivals.com that will give more insight on this blog.
