Recruiting Time Can Run Out Quickly
December 16th, 2008 - byNational Signing Day is still a ways off (Feb. 4th) for college football, but many teams are already scrambling for the last few available players to fill needed scholarship slots. Penn State’s quarterback future hinges on a huge announcement tonight from Kevin Newsome.
But, most importantly, he would walk onto the Penn State campus as only the team’s second scholarship quarterback for next season — and with an immediate backup spot all but locked up.
There pretty much are no other recruiting options available at this late date if Newsome decides to go elsewhere. The Lions suddenly became shorthanded at the position when talented sophomore Pat Devlin decided to transfer last week.
When a school like Penn State is essentially down to its last chance to fill the most important position on the field you know how fast recruiting has sped up. Athletes that have any hope of playing Division I football should be starting as early as freshman year. Without a head start there is always a chance that you can get passed up before you even get started.
