There is another window and that's the college recruiting window. I'm in Florida watching my daughter's D1 college softball team play in their annual spring break tournament. I had a chance to talk recruiting with her head coach. My daughter's coach told me that she has already offered a 2010 grad and is now looking at 2011 and 2012. Athletically this is a mid-level D1 school and very elite academic school. This coach says the big time programs (SEC, Pac 10, Big 12, ACC, Big 10) have already finished with 2010 recruiting and are getting verbal commitments from 2011's now. Getting started freshman year is very important!

Charlie, great advice. I'm coaching freshman baseball this season and I'm sorry to see several players giving up through lack of focus, effort and enthusiasm. One talented student-athlete may be taken off the team for poor academic performance. I commented to another coach yesterday that these student-athletes may very well be finished with high school baseball after this season - their window may be closing early.
