Basketball Interview with 2011 Grad Desiree King from Texas.

May 28th, 2009 - by Amanda Rawson

NCSA caught up with rising basketball athlete Desiree King to talk about her basketball recruiting.

NCSA: What are you doing to stand out in the recruiting process?

King: From the business end, letters and phone calls. Hundreds of letters to colleges, and hundreds of phone calls to coaches. You have to let college coaches know you are interested in playing at the next level. Secondly, club basketball you have to play on a team that plays in the big tournaments, to be notice.

NCSA: Have you taken any unofficial visits yet? Tell us about them.
King: Because of my busy schedule I only had time for one campus visit. I went to Texas Tech and the environment was great. I have had several game visits though, two at Texas Tech and one at Wayland Baptist University.

NCSA: Have you received a call from a coach yet and how did it go?
King: Since I’m only a sophomore I have not received any phone calls, but I have made some calls to a few coaches; the calls went very well. Due to the fact I’m a sophomore there was not much said, but I do know the future do look promising.

NCSA: How do you handle nerves before a big game or tournament?
King: I’m very nervous in the locker room. I just sit there and think what could happen; someone has to win and someone has to lose, and nobody wants to lose. It seems like when I step on the court; all that tense nervousness just goes away. The atmosphere of the crowd the fans that love me and the fans that hate me increases my confidence.

NCSA: How do you deal with disappointment in the recruiting process? Can you give an example?
King: I haven’t had any disappointments. Everything has been good. I think if you are a player that just wants to play at a college level, you may not go to the college you dream about, but there are always colleges out there for you.

NCSA: Why should college coaches recruit you?
King: I’m a hard worker and I bring a winning attitude to the team. For some reason I tend to bring the best out of my teammates.

NCSA: What are your summer goals?
King: My summer goals are to just get better. The better I get the better I can help my teammates.

NCSA: Who do you look up to the most to stay on track?
King: The person I look up to is my father; Elliot King. My father and I are alike. We both show the love and the passionate for the game.

NCSA: What is your biggest take away so far in the recruiting process?
King: The waiting; at my young age at this point I don’t know what to expect. Like the kind of offers that are out there for me. It is hard waiting until my junior year to know where I stand.

NCSA: Overall, how has the recruiting process been for you so far? Has NCSA made a big impact for you?
King: The NCSA recruiting program has open up doors that I couldn’t even imagine. Because of them I am known across the U.S.
