On the Way to Alaska

Note: NCSA Recruiting Expert Charlie Adams traveled to Alaska this week to help spread NCSA’s recruiting education. This was written on his journey.

I am excited about delivering College Recruiting Simplified to Fairbanks area athletes this Friday night in Alaska.

The local University there is the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. Under the direction of Athletic Director Forrest Karr, a former Notre Dame hockey player, UAF made news recently. Their student-athletes posted the highest cumulative grade-point average in school history with a 3.25 cumulative GPA.

In total, 25 student-athletes were recognized with academic all-conference honors throughout the 2009-09 campaign. A select group of Nanooks garnered national all-academic recognitions, led by men’s hockey forward Trevor Hyatt, a Rhodes Scholar nominee.

Hyatt, who maintained a perfect 4.0 grade-point average all four years, graduated in May with honors from the University of Alaska Fairbanks with a degree in civil engineering. As a player his relentless work ethic and ability to lead by example also played a role in Alaska’s defense, which finished second in the CCHA and NCAA only to Notre Dame after allowing just 1.74 goals a game.

I guarantee you companies are on him like white on rice. College athletes are more in demand than ever, especially ones like Trevor who excel academically and athletically.
“Our coaches have set high standards,” said Karr. “The culture is established. If you want to be a Nanook student-athlete, you’re expected to be a student first.”

Twenty one Nanooks maintained perfect 4.0 GPAs in either the fall or spring semester.

The emphasis on academics in College Sports has never been higher. Be sure to use this summer to set higher academic goals for the upcoming year, so that you have more options to play College Sports.
