Congrats to the US National Soccer Team!

October 13th, 2009 - by Jeff Schlicht

Over the weekend the United States National team made another step in the right direction.  The 3-2 win over Honduras clinched a spot in the 2010 World Cup.

My question to you is what do you expect from this team moving forward?  Is making a quarterfinal appearance likely in 2010?  What about the Semi’s?

  1. Marko Says:

What do I think about the team moving forward this coming year? There is nothing to think about! They will either finish 3rd or 4th like they normally do in the World Cup pending on how tough their group is. It’s likely that they could finish second and advance, but that’s only if the group is somewhat weak. Like let’s say it’s U.S., Chile, North Korea, and some team that comes out of the play-off round in Europe.

You can’t assume the best for the U.S. even after watching them play in this past Confederations Cup. They go into qualifications every year competing against some broke squads. The only one that gives them any competition is Mexico, and they are weak as well!

Now let’s talk about a team that will actually compete. Serbia! Who recently qualified! They just got done throwing the hammer down on a decent but not very good Romania team 5-0. No big deal. Their toughest opponent in the group was France, and they didn’t do to bad against them. Watch for the blues! We will actually make some noise this time around. Napred Plavi!

The US has a soccer team??

  3. Justin Olson Says:

We have a young team but I am expecting them to make a big push. The US is heading in the right direction, especially with all of the young talent we have. With everyone healthy I’m going to say that the US will make it to the final 8.

  4. Jaclyn T Says:

Any team qualifying for the World Cup is a pretty significant event. This win against Honduras is going to give the USA team so much momentum to help further their success in South Africa. I expect them to battle strong and make our country proud! Even if it is only a quarterfinal appearance for the team, who cares! It is still exciting to know our country is going to the 2010 World Cup.

  5. stetson chamberlin Says:

i am glad they made it but i don’t think the will win

  6. Jeff Schlicht Says:

Last time I checked the US did have a team playing the most popular sport in the world…

  7. Brandon Slaybaugh Says:

The United State’s victory over Honduras will obviously help them as they move forward, but I don’t think it will give them the crucial push they need to go extremely far in the Cup. The team is blessed with eager youth, but that youth might be their downfall in the end. They have a lot of work to do to meet their goals and everyone else’s high expectations, but anything’s possible these days. The US will have to use a lot of strategic moves to navigate their way through the cup, and if they play their cards right and they get some luck, they might be looking at a decent showing at the World Cup.

  8. Christian Yarros Says:

Personally, I think that it all depends on their group play. The United States needs an easier group to gain momentum. They have shown that they can beat the best teams in the world. The US is just not consistent. As much as I want them to go far, I think it is unlikely. But if they play like they did in the confederation cup against Spain, there is some potential here.

  9. Will Streck Says:

I believe that if the US team stays focused on what they need to do then they should be able to advance throughout the tournament. They have the momentum that they need in order to be successful. If the team can play like they did in the Confederations cup then they should have no problem with most of the opponents that they will be facing. In the past we have normally done fairly well in the World Cup, but we always seem to lose our momentum and the team stops performing at their best.

  11. Justin Blubaugh Says:

i think its great that we made it. i just hope that we can put some balls in the back of the net this time.

  12. Jeffrey George Says:

I think they did a great Job vs Honduras. I am expecting them to do well in the World Cup also but im wondering how the loss of Charlie Davies will affect the team. He was in a car crash this morning in which the car he was in spit in half. It is unknonw if he will ever be able to return.

  13. Adam Abuhadema Says:

I think it’s awsome that the U.S. has qualified for the World Cup again for 2010. Though I’m not sure how well there going to do this World Cup, but I know they are progressing and I believe eventually will be a top team in the world.

  14. The British Gentleman Says:

I personally think that when it comes to how the American team will do in this upcoming World Cup….it will all depend on who is in their group. The side does tend to live on momentum, whether its making a globally shocking run or playing against weaker sides and somehow managing to come up with the loss.

In the Confed cup, there were times where the counter-attack style of the american team, tied in with Howard playing between the posts like he had 5 arms and 4 legs, that makes you wonder just what could happen if suddenly the snow ball begins to roll down the hill…..

But then there is……that other side

Having seen England, one of the supposed “teams in contention to win the World Cup” get beaten and at times outplayed by a no-name Ukrainian side, it is important to remember that when the tournament starts….anything can happen.

Although many wont like it, i would have to say that i cant see the american side reaching the semi or quarterfinals. Through the qualification and friendly games they may have secured their spots and won some games, but their performances have not been consistent. Their best bet would be to get some luck in the group stages (lord knows they deserve a bit after the last campaign) and can get through to the elimination rounds…..

As for the brits…England need to get back on the horse on Wednesday against Belarus, find their form…..and have as many Manchester United players as we can fit in the squad….

But hey, thats just my opinion..

  15. Emigdio Esquivel Says:

What do I think about the U.S. National team? I think they will be a tough team to beat. Especialy over the win against Spain in the Confederations cup shocked the world. USA taking out the number one team in the world was something that no one thought would happen. I expect a good ranking in the world cup next year in South Africa. USA has the experience and the potential to go to the final and maybe win it all. One thing the U.S. should consider doing is to send more players to Europe because thats where the best players in the world are at. They will have way more talent and power to take out the other teams. But the U.S. should rank at least in the top 5 teams of the world cup.

  16. Eric Bracy Says:

It will be interesting to see how the U.S. does. It think we got some serious talent, and only time will tell!

  17. Mladjo Says:

Well, first off, with America as powerful and advanced as it is to be pretty weak overall in soccer is kind of sad. So many smaller countries have such a better youth program and naturally that shows eventually with Senior squads at big events. USA if they were in another location in the world such as South America or Europe would almost never make a World Cup…I give much more credit to teams who qualify from Europe, South America, even Africa… The zone Mexico and USA are in is a joke and if they didn’t qualify each year that would be extremely sad for such a powerhouse country!

USA may get out of their group but I doubt that even…the only reason they beat good teams sometimes is that they play horrible soccer, long ball, kicking the ball all over the field, giving no space for an actual soccer game to develop… I remember not too long ago watching Brazil versus USA in a Friendly match, Brazil couldn’t show how much skill they had because US players fouled them every other second, it was 0-0 for like the first 40 minutes before Brazil scored their first…then obviously in the second half once the US went down 1-0 Brazil poured in the goals and won like 4-0…similar happened in the Confederations Cup Final this summer….. That doesn’t say much for a team, even the Faroe Islands can play for a draw all game and only lose 1-0 to a France for example…even get a 0-0 tie sometimes…that is not soccer people, I am very sorry to tell you… And FIFA rankings are very flawed, to put a USA in the top 20 even is a joke. …just my two cents…

  18. Jeff Schlicht Says:

It just became tougher for the US. One of their top strikers, Charlie Davies, is in critical condition. Hands down one of the fastest players on the team!

  19. Alex Dull Says:

Yes, HORRIFIC news for the US national team. Charlie Davies had such a huge impact on the team and I give my prayers to him + family/friends. May his recovery go well and I hope to see him back on the field as fast as he can run up and down it. As for the rest of the team, US will have a lot of work to show they can match up with the best countries. The Brazil match was pretty bad, but I do seem to remember the match against Spain. US have a lot to prove and so far I think they have done a lot for American soccer this year. GO USA!!

  20. Steven Rhose Says:

I think that the US National Team is pretty good. They have the potentail to go on in the next world cup and place high in the standings. They are a fun team to watch and I pay attention to the way their center mids play. I like the way they distribute the ball outside. I still think that they are the next best to the European teams. The 2010 World Cup is going to be exciting to watch and there will be some interesting match ups. I can’t wait to see who makes it to the finals.

  21. Ryan Johnson Says:

I feel like it is possible to maybe make the quarterfinals but it still wont be easy. But the US national team should definitly improve.

  22. john Says:

it all depends on what group they get in but due to the absent of charlie Davies it is going to be even harder because they don’t have speed up top no more because he has been a major factor for them scoring goals in their last couple of games.prayers go out to his family and those who were in the car with him. the world cup is going to be exciting seeing that the they beat Spain 2-0 and almost beat Brazil which are the top 2 teams in the world rankings so they have a pretty good chance and teams know what the usa can do

  23. Sergio Masi Says:

First off, I want to start by congratulating the United States on qualifying for 2010, which in my eyes is very impressive considering such strong countries such as France and Portugal have yet to qualify. Secondly, the country has a very talented squad, and the best I have ever seen out of them. They may not have the big names that play out of Brazil and the European countries, but they play strong and as a team which is there advantage over these countries. I also like the pressure that’s been put on this team, regardless of there impressive confederations cup finish, they still have to prove themselves to the world.

I expect a quarterfinal match from the United States, and possibly a semi final.

  24. Carlos Says:

Well, i believe that the US national Soccer team is a team that is clearly under-rated and thought uch of, but indeed the team is growing both in talent and in status and soon the US national soccer team will be a team to fear in every tournament it enters.

  25. Mat Says:

I think that or boys actually may have a good run this coming year. In past world cups they’ve been profficient, but any serious advancement has usually been due to luck or barely squeezing by the opposing team.

This year I believe we have a very solid team, and that we should be able to rack up lots of wins with confidence. Coach Bradley already has an outstanding record as head coach, and I’m sure he, and every player on the squad, is looking to prove that the US is becoming a soccer heavyweight on the global scale.

Best of luck to Charlie Davies in his recovery.

  26. Trey Padgett Says:

Anything can happen. Before the Confederations Cup in South Africa we were a silent team. But after defeating Spain and making it to our first FIFA tournament finals this shocked the world and gave us confidence. The U.S. team needs a good draw for the World Cup. Last world cup we had a tough bracket hopefully we can get a better draw. This World Cup I think we will do much better and stride for history making cause we are a team that has grown over the years with more confidence and experience than ever. We WILL be a factor and compete in this tournament. The qualification games have gone very well, we have a great and confident coach and have nothing to stress over. We’ve made it now lets win it.

  27. Justin Olson Says:

USA!!!!!! I was proud to watch how the U.S. kept their poise last night and came back to tie in the last few seconds of injury time. Two defensive break downs almost cost us the game but they kept their composure until the end. Seeing how they were able to come back and tie playing down the whole game was a victory in itself. The U.S. is going to upset some countries in the world cup and I truely beleive we will make it to the final eight.

  28. Romick Vertilus Says:

I truly think that the U.S team is improving years after years. This team compares to other teams that USA had before i think this one is kind of like way better than the other ones.Let’’s take a moment to remember one of their greatest achievement on confederations cup. Last year was their first time to be the run-up of this great competition. They have defeated a big team like Spain on the semifinal and was leading on Brazil by two goals on the first half but unfortunately the big giant soccer team of history has came up and won them 3-2. I can’t predict the future but all i want to say to the U.S National Team is a good luck on the world cup of 2010!

  29. Derek Says:

My thoughts on the U.S. national team clinching a spot in the 2010 World Cup are that it’s great that the national made it to the World Cup this year. Now moving forward, let’s get a few wins out of the National team.
I believe they are talented enough that they could make a quarterfinals appearance in 2010. If that was to happen that would be a great achievement for our soccer team. I’m very excited for the summer of 2010.

  30. garrett mahone Says:

i believe we really could make a push towards the quarter-finals or maybe even the semi-finals. and in this last year we have really shown that we can compete with teams like brazil, italy, argentina, and even spain. this shows we could be a major player in south africa next year.
i also think our team is going to have a prosperus future. if you look at the concacaf tournament we played in, we went all the way with a team of green horns. i truly can’t wait to see our boys go all the way next year.

  31. Tucker Shepard Says:

I think the U.S.’s win over Honduras was exactly what they needed. Now they will have a lot of momentum heading into the world cup. This team is one of the youngest we’ve seen, but also one of the most talented, and I believe quarters or even semis are a realistic goal. Maybe with Charlie Davies accident, the U.S. will have even more of a drive to win. Hopefully they can do as well as we all know they can.

  32. Jordan Carmichael Says:

Well, i’d say the US team falls somewhere in the middle of the pack. They have their great days, but that happens when the defense plays great. With the loss of Onyewu, I’m not sure how far they’re going to make. I’m hoping for the quarterfinals at least, and once that stage is reached, anything is possible. Just look at the Spain victory!

  33. Rob H Says:

With regards to the USA Mens National team, I believe that they are a severely under rated team. Especially after the big 2-0 win over the #1 ranked Spain. At the same time I think that they will deffinatly miss the playing contributions of Davies. He is a quality starter and also a good player to come off the bench. Along with that, I think he brings a pace to the game that is needed to keep up with some of the higher class teams in the world such as Spain and Brazil.

Now with the World Cup itself, I do think that it may be one of the most competitive in recent history. There are multiple teams that are capable of going to the elimination stages of the tournament. South Africa seems to be excited for hosting the Cup, but the news has been saying things like “its possible they might not be ready”. And that seems to be a concern with some people. All in all, It should be a good World Cup. The US team has the skill to make it far, but at the same time all the other teams also have that same capability.

  34. chris clinton Says:

i think that the are still young and have alot of potental and im glad they made in and wish them the best

  35. lupe Says:

They are going to do great after the confederations cup experiance they have a great chance for the final 8 and specially with their forward , jozy altidore i expect him to do great .

  36. HENRY SAYs! Says:

they are a very young team but i think they will win games agaisnt good teams and actually make a run
