Why Haven’t I Heard from my Dream School?

May 26th, 2010 - by NCSA Sports

“Coach Taylor – I was just wondering why I haven’t gotten a letter from the college I would like to attend after high school, and that is the University of Hawaii.   I have been making first and second team all-conference and my team and I won the STATE championship, but I feel like I’m not being recognized. What more do I need to do?”

This is a great question and one that needs to be broken down into parts.  First of all, it sounds like you are doing everything you can athletically to reach the next level – so keep it up!  However, it also sounds like you are only targeting one college which could be a mistake.  Remember, there are hundreds of colleges out there that offer collegiate opportunities. In order to find the best fit, you should target at least 50-100 colleges initially.  If you limit yourself to only one college, what happens if that coaching staff is not interested?

Also, make sure you are realistic.  Do you have the athletic and academic qualifications to play at the schools you are targeting?  Here are a few ways you can gauge that:

- Check out the team’s roster and learn about the current players.  How big are they?  Where are they from?  If they have backgrounds, what was their high school experience like?
- Also, visit the NCSA Recruiting Guidelines to learn some general division requirements for each sport.

If you fit all those criteria then proceed to step two below.  If not, you should consider targeting different schools!

What is step 2?  Get proactive.  Make sure your information is online in an organized format, find the coach’s contact information and get it in front of them.  They can’t possibly recruit you if they don’t know you, and currently it sounds like that might be part of the problem.

Good luck!
