What do College Coaches Look for in a Highlight Video? Just ask Tom Lemming…
May 28th, 2010 - byVideo is a must in the recruiting process. Unfortunately, recruits often make crucial mistakes with their highlight tape that might cost them a scholarship or roster spot. In an effort to expose some of those mistakes as well as provide insight on how college coaches evaluate video, NCSA Recruiting Analysts Bob Chmiel and Randy Taylor recently sat down with nationally renowned expert, Tom Lemming, to get the inside scoop.
What should recruits take away from this video?
- Video is a must. College coaches rely heavily on video during the process as an initial evaluation tool
- A poorly sequenced highlight tape could be detrimental for a recruit. College coaches might only look at a few plays to make a quick evaluation and if they see the wrong plays, it might be costly!
- Highlight video gives the college coach a “taste” of what the recruit is capable of and is typically a precursor for a full game film request.
- Years ago, college coaches depended on the high school coach for access to film. They could not get it anywhere else. This caused families to depend heavily on high school coaches in the past. However, with the emergence of new video technology, families can now provide film to coaches directly.
- College coaches receive stacks of video, many unsolicited, from recruits. Unless those videos are requested or pass along by a trusted third party, they might only get viewed at the end of the process to fill walk on spots.
Although video is only one step in the process, it is an important one! Make sure you get it right.
