A student-athlete will be under the supervision of a college coaching staff for four or five years. Those coaches, including the head coach, strength coaches, position coaches, training staff, and academic support coaches might have more impact on the athlete’s life than any professor. A coach can make an experience enjoyable, stimulating, rewarding, or miserable. Because the coaches can have a huge influence on an athlete’s college experience, parents should get to know them from afar. Parents and athletes should work together to find a coach whose values they share, whose personality will benefit the athlete, and who is someone the child respects.
