Earlier in July, high school football players from 16 different schools in Indiana got a taste of the NFL life at the NFL Play Football Showcase at Pike High School. These athletes tested their speed, strength and agility by competing in five drills used by the pros during the annual NFL Scouting Combine. Every high school athletes’ performance was measured by the same technology used by the NFL.
This event was hosted by NCSA in partnership with the NFL and Zybek Sports, who provided the combine testing equipment. The goal: Give high school football players the opportunity to get their verified combine numbers and see how they stack up against other top athletes. The outcome: Success.
Let the drills begin
Athletes arrived at Pike High School ready to show off their skills. The football players came from schools of all sizes and all corners of Indiana. For assistant football coach Scott Alexander, the diversity of athletes was one of the best parts.
“Getting schools from (Class) 1A, 2A all the way up to 6A teams in the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference with this technology is nothing you see every day,” Alexander told WishTV.com. “You can sense the excitement from the players to the coaches.”
No matter the athlete’s position or school, the performance measurement technology was the ultimate equalizer. The event gave each athlete the chance to scope out the skills of other football players their age and in their position as they all competed in the following drills:
- 40-yard dash
- 3-cone drill
- Shuttle run
- Vertical jump
- Broad jump
Jeffersonville senior running back Kameron Fuller used this opportunity to see how he compared to other football players as he looks to lock down a football scholarship this year. “I didn’t think I was going to be one of the fastest in the 40-yard dash but I’m glad that I am,” Fuller told WishTV.com. “Everyone was good here and I like that competition.”
The NFL Play Football Showcase follow-up
After the event, all athlete scores are posted online, so they can see where they stand against the competition. The football players also receive an individual workout tape and their official work out times. These will be sent to college football coaches across the country to help these aspiring college football players gain more exposure to college programs.
NCSA, the NFL, and Zybek thank every athlete and coach for making this a truly special event!
