NCSA compiled the following guidelines after surveying crew coaches at every level of collegiate competition. Your video does not need to be a polished and professionally done highlight reel.
NCSA strongly recommends that you submit varsity level or equivalent club footage when creating a video. Freshman/Sophomore/JV footage is generally not recommended.
Introduce yourself to the coaches. Give your name, your high school, your graduation year, your position(s), your height, your weight and your ERG score. Include your seat # and jersey color if you are including footage from competition.
Rowing Footage
You will want to show your rowing skills from a few different angles. Show the whole crew, so the viewer can see how the boat swings together (body movements) and how well you follow others. Being in the bow seat is generally harder because you have seven other people to follow and copy every move. You should try to zoom in and show your technique up close. You will want to get the whole body in and also show the blade going in and out of the water.
An aerial view is also recommended. If possible, have someone do some footage from a bridge. It is also good to show the boat at two speeds. One, a low stroke rating (16 SPM), that way, you can show how well you can row at lower speeds (it's a lot harder to set/balance a boat at a 16 than it is at a 30). Then show a clip from a race or at race pace -30-34SPM. It would also be good to show a race where your crew walked on another boat as that always looks very impressive.
Note:
• Acceptable Formats: a standard DVD that plays on any external DVD player as well as several digital files sent by way of USB thumb drive, data disc (DVD/CD), or through yousendit.com. (.MPG, .MPEG, .MOV, .WMV) Here is a link describing the structure of a DVD if you wish to electronically send the footage from your standard DVD.( http://club.cdfreaks.com/f72/tutorial-dvd-video-file-structure-77646/)
• Unacceptable formats include: music CD, VHS, HI-8, or Mini DV tape and several digital files (.AVI, .MSWMM, .MP4, .VRO, .WPL, .ASX)
In addition, after you create your own DVD test it on at least one other computer and a second DVD player before sending it to NCSA. If it does not play you may not have finalized it properly. Some unfinalized DVDs may play on the machine from which it they were burned, but not work in any other machine. It is vital to always double check your DVDs.
We can accept a few alternate formats burned on DVDs as data discs. These include: Windows Media Files (.wmv), Quicktimes (.mov) and MPEGs (.mpg). These are the only acceptable file types. Please do not send .AVI files. Again, if sending a disc burned as a data DVD please check the contents on the disc on a second computer.
• Upon receipt, all DVDs become the property of NCSA.
