How To Film:
- Film from the closet location possible to the event.
- If possible, station the camera on a tripod to keep it steady
- The camera view should not be obstructed (people in stands, etc)
- Focus on the athlete being taped so that they are clear and in focus, but not too close!
What NCSA will do with your Video:
- Inform you when we receive your video via email. If the footage does not follow the guidelines NCSA will mail it back to the address from which is was received. Otherwise, your footage will not be returned.
- Evaluate up to 7 minutes of logged footage you send in.
- Select 2-3 minutes of your best performances.
- Edit the footage in to a highlight.
- Upload your footage to your recruiting profile.
- Inform you when your video is complete!
The highlight video for your NCSA Recruiting Profile is meant to attract initial interest and allow for initial evaluation. Coaches may still want to see you compete in person or view unedited video to fully evaluate your abilities.
Information Based on Position:
- Sprinters:
- Be sure to get a front view, side view and rear view.
- Tape from a low height and record through all phases of block work (mark, set, release, push, drive and acceleration phase).
- It is also important to get a side taping of their chest work at the finish. Include a total of 3-5 minutes of logged footage.
- Jumpers:
- Critical to this event is foot placement consistency.
- In both high and long jump the "P" (or penultimate step) is very important.
- Tape from both the end of the long jump pit and by the take off board.
- For the high jump, be sure to tape from the open side of the jump. (Ex: a right side jumper should be taped from the left).
- It is critical to get the drive phase and position of hips and arms up to and over the bar.
- Show 10-15 jumps.
- Throwers:
- An aerial view is especially good for the shot and discus as it allows coaches to see the rotation of the throw.
- If possible, film from the stands at a downward angle. Also include tape from a position at the back of the circle.
- Zoom in on carriage of the implement as well as release.
- Include film of footwork.
- Show 10-15 throws for consistency of skill.
- Hurdlers:
- Film front, rear and side views.
- Zoom in on lead leg, trail leg and arm drive. Include film of the runner’s block work.
- For the 300 or 400 hurdles, film from the stands, so as to see lane efficiency while racing this event.
- Include a total of 3-5 minutes of logged footage.
- Middle Distance/Distance:
- If possible cross country runners should send footage of the 1600M or 3200M rather than 5K courses, which are difficult to tape.
- Use footage to show a runner’s start, their cut-in expertise, and aggressiveness.
- Include close-ups of arm carriage and foot placement while racing on the track (run the shortest distance by hugging the inside lane).
- Add 2-3 complete races to Video Log.
- Add portions of a 5k run such as start, finish, and middle.
