Personal Statement

If I were to describe myself, it would be as a loyal friend, a dedicated teammate, a determined player, a passionate student who always tries to demonstrate leadership on the field, in the classroom, and in the community. My nature is to set very high standards and expectations for myself, striving always to achieve success in challenging goals which require extreme focus. To have reached this point in my field hockey career, I have struggled with and fought through failure, and frustration; but through this journey, I achieved a deep sense of confidence, security, and pride. Much of my acquired success is due to my loving family, caring teachers, and dedicated coaches who have helped me reach my goals, and who have shown me the road to becoming the person I am today. For them, I am truly grateful.

My name is Emilie Martin and as I write this I am 15 years old. I have played on my school team for a brief four years, and am in my second year as a travel team member. But, my passion and love of this sport started much earlier. The first time I picked up a “stick” I was in the fifth grade. From that point onward, field hockey became much, much more than just a sport to me. It became my passion.

At that time, I had been training for about six years in the art of Taekwondo, a form of Korean martial arts; I am now in my tenth year with a ranking of Third Degree Black Belt with the American Taekwondo Association. Taekwondo is an individual, self-disciplined sport requiring a high-level of discipline. However, it is through field hockey that I came to understand and relish what being a team player means. It taught me to understand the importance of being a team member - through thick or thin, winning or losing – performing and competing as a single entity, a collective unit. I felt the commitment, and realized that hard work, diligence, and perseverance are not my personal choices but responsibilities that I owe.

As an athlete, I bring a competitive and aggressive edge to the game and persist in “putting it all on the line.” I encourage my teammates to push themselves and transcend their limits. Mainly, I play right or left midfield, but am adaptable and quite successful as a forward when the need arises. In all modesty, I have been told frequently that I am a well-rounded, perspective and technically insightful player.

Looking toward my future, I see myself continuing my obsession at a college in which my teammates demonstrate good sportsmanship and who display the admirable qualities that my “big one family” in Yarmouth has lived over the years. I will bring energy, ambition, mental and physical toughness on the field and in the classroom – as one who strives for perfection and who will personally tolerate nothing less. I live and breathe field hockey and I truly believe that I would be a strong asset to a college field hockey program.
