Personal Statement
Dear Coach,
My name is Leighton Hernandez and I will be coming into my senior year at Rim of the World High School. I am 5-11 and weigh 165 lbs. During my 2011 season I played in several positions including both quarterback and receiver, but this upcoming season I will be working towards excelling in the quarterback position. Some of my characteristics I have obtained both on and off the field signify a lot of who I am. I know and understand the hard work and dedication it takes to be successful in both academics and athletics. My current success is a result of my coaches pushing me to be a better individual and athlete. In additional to my athletic characteristics, I strive academically in the classroom by studying a lot and prioritizing what is most important, education.
During my latest season, I would study game films of upcoming opponents daily by breaking down each game play by play. I would also meet with teammates during off days to practice plays that would be used for the next upcoming game. In addition, I would also meet with fellow teammates, as well as underclassmen, during the off season to work on drills, plays, and individual techniques to better ourselves for the next season. When it comes to passing, I understand that the short game is essential to a successful game plan, but I am not afraid to throw the deep ball. My longest pass last season was 61 yards. During a Velocity training camp in Irvine, CA this last year, I was timed at 4.69 40-yard dash (laser-timed).
When it comes to academics, succeeding in the classroom is important to me. My greatest personal accomplishment was becoming a scholar athlete this past year. In my earlier years of high school, I was challenged with a common learning disability of dyslexia. It was apparent to my teachers that my challenge could be easily overcome and offered me an Individualized Educational Program. As a result of this successful program, I have received over a 3.0 G.P.A since then.
Overall, I am confident that I can offer leadership, speed, quickness, ability to learn, a team player, and a captain at the next level. I am the type of person that will dream big and one of those dreams is to play at that next level. I want to be a contributing player for a great program and use my passion to help a team be successful. I aim to be a starter as a freshman, but understand what may be best for both the team and myself. I realize I am small in height and weight, but with hard work, dedication, consistency, and over-coming challenges, I believe that anything is possible if you put the time and effort into it.
Thank you for taking the time to check out my profile. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Leighton Hernandez
