Personal Statement
I began my youth football career with the AYF Monroe Lions. Over five seasons, guided by amazing coaches, we tallied a 61-0 record. We also won every league, state, and regional championship game we played in. Sticking together for our transition to high school, we delivered a perfect freshmen season. In 2016, we reached the State Championship quarterfinals. As a Junior, my contributions to the team at Defensive End earned me a place on the All Southwest Conference First Team. I was also recognized as an All-State player in the class L division in Connecticut. Moving into our Senior year, the team is working to build on our successes in 2016 and our goal is to reclaim the state title for Masuk High School in 2017.
There is a secret to my team’s success. It is a deeper and more important lesson than could ever appear on any scoreboard and will last long after my athletic ability fades. Revealed to me by my parents and honed razor sharp by my coaches, I value it above all else. Simply put: I have learned not to compete only for the reward of victory. Instead, I embrace the entire journey towards each game. I know that victory doesn't always result from effort, no matter how much is invested. That doesn't mean that such effort is wasted. I know that I must answer a call from deep within me to constantly improve. That allows me to pursue victory with a true and joyous heart. To be worthy of that aspiration, I know that I must always deliver a "perfect effort". For me, a "perfect effort" is not one free from mistakes, just one free from regret.
Today, this perspective compels me to be the absolute best student athlete that I can be. Tomorrow, I will follow the same formula in all aspects of my life to build a family and career of my own.
I look forward to having the opportunity to play for a coach who also values this lesson, and I hope to have a chance to introduce myself and demonstrate my commitment to these values first-hand.
