One of the highlights of my high school career was when my team, the Oak Park Trojans, made it to the National Championship games held in Florida in 2013, under the Pop Warner Organization. My interest in football began at the age of ten. I played defensive positions for Pop Warner teams, junior varsity, and varsity high school teams my entire football career. My enthusiasm for the game started when I realized I could channel my anger or any aggression I had towards my opponent on the field without penalty. In fact, during my high school career, I was given the name Minister of Defense” because I made numerous tackles each game.
However, playing the game of football has taught me several life lessons. I learned that you have to not only be physically strong, but mentally strong to be successful in this game. I learned that many times you have to play through your pain in order to reach your ultimate goal. I also learned that it takes a team to win games and not just one’s individual talents. As a two-sport student athlete, I understand how important it is to not only have athletic talent, but to also have academic success. Therefore, I strive to maintain an honor roll status in high school and carry that same discipline over in college. However, I truly believe what makes an athlete successful starts with having the right attitude. The success of an athlete stems from their ability to listen, learn, and always commit to improving themselves.
