Personal Statement
My name is Zach Overton and I am a 5’11” 240 lb. defensive lineman for the Blue Valley West Jaguars. I was born in Arlington, Texas on December 17, 1996 to John and Michelle Overton, moving to Overland Park, Kansas when I was four. I have an older brother who will be attending the University of Kansas this fall, and a younger sister, who will be a sophomore at St. Thomas Aquinas High school.
Sports have been the love of my life since as long as I can remember; playing t-ball, soccer, and flag football games. My fondest memory was watching Pudge Rodriquez at my first professional baseball game, number 7 has always been my favorite number.
Initially, I concentrated specifically on baseball and football, but during my freshman year I decided to wrestle in order to increase my agility, strength, endurance and utilizing leverage, not just raw strength to overpower my opponent. I loved the physical nature of the sport! Even though I have enjoyed every sport I have participated in, I ultimately discovered that my love is Football, and only Football.
During my freshman football season I played and started A-team defense, and B-team offense. In my sophomore season, I was a full time starter on both sides of the ball for the Junior Varsity squad, which ended up having an 8-1 record. Through my the first two seasons in High School, it would be fair to say that no one played more total downs, much less on the offensive and defensive lines. Heading into my junior season, my head coach, position coach and I discussed our goals for my upcoming junior season. We agreed that I should make it my goal to not only start at Defensive Tackle for varsity, but I should also make it my goal to singlehandedly own the Defensive Tackle Position. During my junior season I started 11 out of 12 games and played every single series throughout those 11 games, other than when the starters came out because the final result was well in hand.
In my first season of regular varsity playing time, I was named to EKL All- Conference Honorable Mention team. The 2013 Blue Valley West Jaguars were District Champions, Regional Champions, and Sectional Champions and were the Runner-Up in the State Semifinals, losing to the eventual Kansas 5A State Champions, a game in which I played the entire game with a broken thumb. I look forward to continue a winning tradition and attitude into my senior season at Blue Valley West, and on into the next level.
Some of the benefits of having a player like me on your roster are Heart, Attitude, Hustle, and Love of the game. I understand I am not the biggest Defensive Tackle you will come across in the recruiting process, but I can guarantee you, I have more heart in the way I play and the way I prepare than any other Defensive Lineman you could find, all things which I’m confident you will notice in my highlight video. I have a winning and “For the good of the team” attitude. While I want to win more than anything because that is what competition is all about, it is more important for my team to succeed more than I want to just personally succeed.
Thank you for taking your time to look at my profile and get to know a little more about me!
