Personal Statement
My name is Darion Keener. Being the son of a military parent, I have had the fortune of playing football in Oklahoma, Kansas, Maryland, and now Kentucky. I currently play Free Safety (FS)/Wide Receiver (WR) for John Hardin High School; however, in the past, I played other positions including Running Back (RB), Cornerback (CB) and Line Backer (LB). I have played Junior Varsity (JV) and Varsity my entire High School career. Last year as a sophomore on the JV team, I was one of the top tacklers, Defensive Captain, and led the team in forced fumbles.
I am currently a high school sophomore and will be the starting safety for Varsity as a junior this coming season. While in Maryland, I had the opportunity of being coached by the same staff that coached Alec Lemon, who went to the NFL last year and broke many records while at Syracuse. The rigor of the football program at Arundel High School reinforced the things taught by my parents from a young age like the importance of motivation, integrity, and dedication. Throughout my years of playing football, I have continued to grow in these things, as they have become the foundation in which I am furthering my goals of becoming a college student athlete.
As a student athlete in high school, I have consistently focused on not only athletics, but also academics. During both my freshman and sophomore years, I have consistently been on the school honor roll and currently have a 3.6 GPA. In the summer of 2013, I was nominated to become a member of the organization ‘Lead America’ and was recently selected to become a member of the National High School Honor’s Society. I have successfully completed Honor’s course in Geometry, English, History and Biology. My schedule for my junior year includes taking dual-credit college courses at the local community college. I have spent time over the last few years volunteering at my local church working with children in Vacation Bible School and have volunteered at the local soup kitchen serving the homeless.
As a freshman, my coach labeled me as only one of two on the entire team that he considered “trustworthy”. My teachers consistently compliment me for my motivation, respect and hard work. I take those things with me on the football field and try to be a leader to my peers. My goal for this upcoming year and for the future as a student athlete is to help build team cohesion, improve my individual skills and be an asset to my coach and fellow players.
