Personal Statement

I have been playing sports since I could walk.  Ever since competing in the backyard with my older brother and his friends, I knew I wanted to be a college athlete.

Early on, I thought baseball was my sport.  I always had tremendous success in youth leagues, and I have been a starting shortstop and pitcher for Dartmouth High School since last year (sophomore).

For the last five years, my favorites have been football and basketball, with a slight edge to basketball.  I played a lot of AAU basketball as a youth, and have started at guard for Dartmouth High School since last year (sophomore), winning several area and state all-star awards.

After just finishing up my junior year of basketball, preceded by my junior year of football, I have decided that I wish to pursue football as my college sport.  I just love everything about football…the team aspect, the individual aspect, the hard/physical aspect, everything!  This past season, my team won the MA State Championship at Gillette Stadium.  I still have goosebumps!  This past season will stay with me forever, and I feel like I have an extended family for life!  Only a football player can explain this feeling….others will not understand it.  Personally, I was selected to several all-star teams at the state and regional level.  On a team that was primarily run oriented, I had a team leading 26 catches for a team-high 520 yards and six touchdowns.  At cornerback, I had 65 tackles, 15 passes deflections and four interceptions.  And I averaged 35 yards per punt.  I enjoy both offense and defense, but if I really had to pick, defense would be my choice.  During our playoff run, I went one-on-one with some of the state’s best receivers, and I really did shut them all down.  I hope that doesn’t sound like too much bragging.

In the classroom, I study hard and maintain a good GPA. I also volunteer at local youth camps and mentor special needs students.

I want to attend a college where I can challenge myself both on the field and in the classroom. I feel I can compete with the best players out there. I have always been a team leader in football, basketball and baseball throughout my life, and I plan on continuing to be a leader on and off the field for the rest of my life.

Thank you for your consideration!

Matt Craig

Craig caught four passes for 55 yards in the final 4:38 of the Indians’ comeback win over Walpole. Jack McCabe scored the game-winning touchdown, but Craig set him up by catching a bullet from quarterback Blaine Almeida and then drawing a pass interference call three plays later."
