Personal Statement
My sophomore year I was invited to go to training camp with the varsity team to be strengthened as a team leader for the JV. After having an outstanding game against Grandville, the coaches decided to pull me up to varsity, but they made it clear that I needed to get stronger, faster, and gain 30 pounds (I was 14 years old and 170 pounds). Now at age 16, I'm proud to say that I have exceeded their expectations. My weight is up to 205 pounds, my bench is now over 300, and I can squat 440 pounds. I am working to improve my 40 yard dash and shuttle time in speed training three days a week and I will also be running track this spring.
My coaches never regretted their decision. As a junior starter I stepped into a position of leadership amongst the defense, working closely with the defensive coordinator, Jason Morrow, often putting in extra hours watching films and discussing game plans. During the 2009 season I led my team in tackles with a total of 108. In my standout game I made 18 solo tackles and 4 assisted. The season culminated with my being awarded 1st team all conference in the Big North.
I believe the greatest awards are those given by your peers. For this reason being voted team captain by my teammates for the 2010 season was one of my greatest accomplishments. Having earned their confidence and respect means a lot to me.
It is my hope that my athletic abilities will provide me with educational opportunities I might not otherwise have. For me it's not just about football it's about getting an education. I am willing to consider attending any school that is able to provide me with some scholarship money. That being said, I do not want to limit my options. I believe I will be able to earn some money on my academic merit as well, with a GPA of 3.457. I am currently undecided on my major, but I am leaning towards a career in the medical field. I also think that becoming an educator at the high school level would be a challenging and rewarding pursuit.
