Personal Statement

Hello, Coaches!
My name is Drew Russell and I am a senior at Creighton Prep, Omaha, Nebraska.  At Prep, I have participated in football, basketball, and track. I also grew up as a champion on a city swim team.  For football, I am captain, start at defensive end and offensive tackle, and I am the long snapper.  During my career I have played all over the field. I am that player that can go in and get the job done. I can adjust quickly to a new game and new position but have seem to have found an excellent fit at defensive end!  I run a 4.8 40, 4.44 shuffle, and I have a standing broad jump of 9' 7". I am very athletic doing every thing as a kid.  I've been center on my basketball team, and over the years I've done sprints, long jump, discus, and shot put in track. I am a well rounded athlete who loves football.  I plan on going to college for an excellent education while also playing excellent football.  Last  fall I was the starting defensive end for the Nebraska, Class A, State Runner Up, Creighton Prep. I'm also proud to have been the only junior to win both of the inter squad awards given out by coaches each week. I am at every workout in season and off season as well as attending 11 camps in the last 2 summers. My dad was a football starter/letterman at Kansas State where my uncle was All American track. My aunt played D1 basketball at Oral Roberts and my sisters are D2 volleyball starters/lettermen, one at Rockhurst University and one at Missouri Western.  I am from a family of college athletes and I know the commitment it takes to succeed at that level.
Success at the next level is also academic.  Grades are a priority and I take academics very seriously. I have a cumulative GPA of 3.94 while taking advanced classes in both Math and English. I am enrolled in two honors classes (Biology and Calculus) and an AP class (English) for my senior year as well as my third year of Italian.  I have an ACT score of 28 from my junior year, and I plan to  take it again in the fall and I will improve upon on that score.
I am careful to pick worthwhile activities both in and outside of school.  From my participation in clubs such as Future Business Leaders of America and Young Republicans, I have learned to be a leader for the future.  I also work at the Omaha Country Club which has allowed me the opportunity to work for someone who is not a teacher or a coach and to learn to relate to others in new and different ways.  Having a job has continued to teach me commitment and responsibility as well as financial independence.  My involvement with my church, mission trips, and youth group help me to keep my focus on things of true value such as family, friends, and community.
I am a dedicated leader, intelligent and coachable. There is so much more in me that  I feel haven't even begun to reach my potential.  I would love to bring my skills and strengths to your program to learn and grow not only as a player but as a person!
Please take a minute to look at my film. I KNOW you will see a player who LOVES the game and is ready to do what needs to be done and WIN!
Drew Russell
