Personal Statement

Greetings Educators, Coaches, Trainers and Stakeholders;

             Since I was 5 years of age watching my older brother play football, I've been hooked. In addition to it being the ultimate team sport it is a lot of fun. I have always dreamed of playing on the collegiate level one day and have been striving everyday since my father put a football in my hand to accomplish this goal. I want to be one of the best to have ever suited up to play football when my playing days are over. Aside from attaining training in radio, television and movies, I hope to be a professional at the game of football with the academic background that screams discipline.

             Henceforth, I know and understand that my talents go beyond confidence. I have proven over my football career that I'm a winner and when my team and I lose, I remain optimistic that we will prevail next time we hit the field. I don't allow doubt to creep into my mind about what we as a team can do. I believe this attitude is contagious, because through my experience it has helped teammates rise to the occasion; believing in themselves as I do. This an energy we all feed off of like brothers; all with our minds set on the same goal... winning.

             Furthermore, while I understand that we are all ready to win, as we are born knowing only life, defeat is always a possibility. With that notion always in mind, I take an attitude that is calm, cool and collective. It's just my nature. I've never been a showboat or a clown on the field. I don't think there is anything wrong with celebrating when there is success as long as it is not excessive. My father always taught me that the true measure of a man is how he handles defeat. So no matter the circumstances, I remain resilient. I believe this is what separates me from many other recruits. I know and understand that there are no shortcuts to the worlds greatest achievements and there are no selfish goals to this ultimate team sport as it should be in all jobs that require a team effort.

          Finally, I have always approached academics as I do sports. I know that we all have strengths and weaknesses. Academically, I always strive to earn a place on the Honor Roll. I don't always succeed but, as my father and mother always say, that is no reason to not keep trying. "Shoot for the stars and you may just land on the moon." I can hear him and my mother like a built in voice in my head telling me to keep going, never give up and score some touchdowns with my grades. Growing up with two parents that are educators... there's no way I would be able to escape the lessons on how to balance sports and academics; nor would I want to. I don't know if this makes me different from other athletes or recruits, but I know it makes me a better man who is more prepared to lead than most who play this game at the high school level. As my Dad always reminds me to keep the five P's as a virtue in life (proper preparation prevents poor performance).

         In conclusion,  I hope to be a professional at the game of football one day in the future. However, my short term goal is to make certain that my academic accomplishments scream discipline and support the notion that I don't allow doubt to creep into my mind about what my team  and I can do. I know and understand that there are no shortcuts to the worlds greatest achievements and there are no selfish goals to this ultimate team sport that I've played my whole life.  I may not always succeed, but I am and have always been resilient enough to keep trying. I've been called a triple threat due to my speed when I run, my accuracy when I throw and my intelligence on and off the field. My goal is to show and prove this for the sake my team, coaches, educators and stakeholders who take the time to invest in my talents.

Sincerely,

Faraji A. Screven
