Aspirations: Like most of my peers, I haven't decided on a degree major just yet. But unlike them, I have a definite vision for my college experience, and having a vision is key. I have never NOT been part of a team... ever. Families are like teams. Being the middle child of five, I've been looked-after (by my older syblings) ... and the one doing the looking-after (of my younger ones). I've been both the follower and the leader. I've also been a part of different sports teams: soccer, baseball, wrestling, LAX. But my passion has always been football. My college vision definitely includes being part of a football team. There are a lot of things I can bring to that team skill-wise, but besides skills, I can also bring motivation and energy.
Academics: This past season I did a radio interview. The host asked me (about being a good student athlete) how I manage school & practice demands. I didn't exactly answer his question, but if I could talk to him now, I'd say that to be successful you need to have self-discipline. My mom doesn't hound me about my homework. I just make sure it gets done. I prepare for the season ahead of time. I've had to cut my work hours to nearly nothing. I usually schedule a study hall in the fall and definitely use it. A lot of times I don't get to hang out with my friends. I think my grades show how well these choices have worked for me so far.
Character: For as long as I can remember, I've always been on the field seeing playing time. And, for as long as I remember, my mom has been working to keep me humble. She'd say things like, "There's nothing worse than an arrogant athlete!" or "those other 10 guys make you look good" and "Jayson, there are kids working just as hard - if not harder- than you to sit the bench! What's the difference between them and you? Talent!" She'd then go on to say that God gave me the talent and it's up to me to do my best with it. So, I do. I work hard and it has paid off for me personally and for my team.
