Personal Statement
Hello, my name is Derrick Briggs. I am a class of 2014 recruit from Choctaw High School in Choctaw, OK. I play middle linebacker now but, played outside linebacker my sophmore year and some safety on JV my sophmore year so I have the athleticism to play wherever needed. I was the only non-senior starter on my defense my sophmore year and finished with 63 tackles, 3 sacks, and 3 forced fumbles in 6 games. The next year being the only returning starter I became middle linebacker and finished with 115 tackles, 4 sacks, 2 patted passes, and a fumble recovery in 10 games. I also was a player of the week twice, NUC Top Prospect, Offense-Defense Showcase Bowl, VTO Elite 100 Showcase, NUC Five Star Showcase, U.S. Army All-American Combine participant, 2nd team All-Oklahoma by Athlon Sports Magazine, All-Conference, All-District, and All-State. So far 6 into my senior year I'm averaging 18 tackles a game and leading the state in tackles. Since being in high school I started on my freshman baseball team and then wrestled varsity at 195 lbs this past season. In school I have a 3.3 GPA and am involved in FCCLA and Key Club which help the community. I also work a little kids football camp every august since all the younger kids look up to me. This coming season my coaches have informed me that they plan to use me a lot on offense and try and get the ball in my hands. I am an extremely hard worker and I pride myself on that. This is why I am a huge leader on my team by leading by example but, that does not mean I won't get in somebodys face and yell if I have too. I strive to be a leader on my team, in my school, and in my community. Coming from a family of very low income I understand nothing is given and you must go out and get what you want. This is the fuel that feeds my ambition to work harder when I think I've done enough and that is on the field and in the classroom. All I need is my chance.
