As a student-athlete, I have seen how a strong education is the foundation to a successful future. It may have taken me longer than my peers to gain this insight, but I believe I am fortunate to have come to this conclusion on my own, through my unique experiences. There is a clear connection between my athletics, and the academic standards I am aiming to meet. My hope is that in the future this connection only becomes stronger.
I have had the opportunity to attend various athletic events at the invitation of local colleges and universities. Attending one recent event that highlighted the accomplishments of its team’s seniors, I was struck by how these student-athletes took full advantage of the educational opportunity they had access to. I too hope to lay the foundation for success in a future career, while continuing my passion of playing football.
Transcripts, grades, even letters do not tell a full story. While I look at my educational path and know that I may have not always taken full advantage of what my high school has to offer, as a junior I am proud of my ability to refocus and reprioritize to ensure that I end my high school experience on my own terms. That includes the blending of athletics and academics, raising my expectations in both worlds to a level that when I meet these standards I know that I have accomplished what I set out to. It is my personal growth and understanding of how these experience play off of one another that sets me apart from my peers, and will help drive my future ambitions and successes.
