Personal Statement

My name is Ford Howell and I am 18 yrs. old. Recently, I was named a 3-Star recruit by Rivals.com and Scout.com. I attend Memphis University School in Memphis, TN. MUS is the best college prep school in the Mid-South. Despite the significant academic rigors at MUS, we also have one of the best football programs and coaching staffs in the nation. MUS plays in the Tennessee Super Prep Div. II Large Division. Year in and year out, MUS plays one of the toughest schedules in the country taking on the likes of perennial national power South Panola (MS 6A) which finished the 2010 season ranked #1 in the nation and 2011 MS 6A State Champ Olive Branch (both of whom our 2009 team beat.). (This past year, I had 14 tackles vs. S. Panola and 9 tackles vs. Olive Branch.) In 2010, I was fortunate to start at LB in my sophomore season as a 6'1" 215 lb. linebacker. In my first varsity start I totalled 11 tackles (1 tackle for a loss) and was named my team's player of the game. During that season, I played both middle and outside linebacker positions and was equally comfortable at both positions.I had a total of 40 tackles, 2 tfl, and 4 QB hurries despite missing 5 games with an injury. This past season, as a 6'1" 226 lb. junior, I totalled 68 tackles, 3 TFL, 1 FF, and 8 QB hurries while playing WLB. After the season, I was chosen to participate in the Army All-American Game Junior Combine in San Antonio, TX on Jamuary 6, 2012. I am currently benching 275 lbs. despite very long arms (74 inch wing span) and squatting 450. I have a great enthusiasm for the game that I would bring to my college team. I like being the ringleader of our defense. I prepare fully in the film room and always know both my assigments and those of all my team mates-that way, once I hit the field, I can play fast without thinking too much. I believe that football can only be played one way-violently. Off the field, my goal is to get a scholarship to a good academic college and get a great education for my life after football.Every class offered at MUS is an Honors level class or above so I will be prepared academically for any type of college experience I am offered. I currently have a 3.3 weighted GPA and scored a 24 on the ACT. My ultimate goal is to get a top notch education while playing the game I love for a quality institution and coach.
