Personal Statement

The biggest priorities in my life are family, school, and friends, but my passion is football. Everything I do from sleeping, to eating, to lifting, to running I do, to become a better football player. I try to excel in every aspect of life including the classroom. I believe that if you want something bad enough that you will stop at nothing until you have it and, that’s what football is for me. It’s a way to escape from everything else and just play the game that I fell in love with as a kid.

Over the course of my life many people and events have influenced who I am today. My mom and dad are the biggest influence on me, ever since I was a kid they have always been pushing me to be the best me that I can be. When I was a little kid my dad always coached me in every sport that I did whether it was basketball, football, or baseball. Having him always there made me want to perform at a higher level. I always pushed myself that extra mile to be the best that I could be. My mom has always been my biggest supporter, come rain, snow, or hail. She would be there in the stands cheering me on. My mom, being a teacher, has always taught me how important education is and that if I just keep working hard I could achieve great things. Schooling has always been important in my house especially college, considering my dad didn’t go to college. That played a role in choosing to go to college. It made me want to make him proud as a father to see his son do something that he never accomplished. That taught me that hard work and ambition can get you far in life if you just set your eye on something and never stop until you achieve it.

My academic goal for high school is to finish my senior year as I began my freshman year and that was knowing that I am building myself for something bigger and better. I would like to finish my senior year with straight A’s and try to raise my grade point average as high as possible. I know that if I end on a good note I will carry that work ethic, drive, and positive attitude into college. My goals for college are to keep my grade point average above 3.2 throughout my bachelors or master’s degree in business management and entrepreneurship. I became interested during my junior year and I went to nationals for DECA. The DECA program which is Distributive Education Clubs of America is all the up and comers of all degrees in business throughout the U.S. and Canada. I placed 15th out of over two hundred students and went to nationals in Atlanta, Georgia.
I believe that I have some unique qualities that really describe who I am. Since I can remember I have always had a lot of friends, I’m very easy to talk to and am constantly making new friends. I can adapt to new places, for instance when I had to move schools in the summer before seventh grade year knowing no one. I ended up leaving middle school with a number of friends that I’m still in touch with today. I always try my hardest to achieve what they ask. I might fail, but I never quit and never give up. I’m not afraid to embarrass myself or fail and look stupid, because I know every mistake is a chance to learn from what you did wrong. I am responsible because I am able to balance sports, homework, and part time jobs. Lastly I believe that I am a leader among my peers because in the classroom, on the field, or at home those around me always know they can look to me, talk to me, and depend on me for guidance.

Football captured my attention at a very young age, whether it was watching it on the television or my brother’s games on the weekends. I fell in love with football when first started playing flag football. I remember the rush I would get every time I caught it and ran for my life, it’s like nothing else. My first live football game I ever watched was my brother in flag football and I immediately was drawn to begging my dad to take me to the park and throw the football around with me. I would not relent until he would take me. When I was finally old enough it was my turn to play. Those were some of my best childhood memories. In my younger years, playing football taught me things like, hard work, pushing through the pain, and glory. I learned a lot about myself playing this renowned sport. It taught me that there is always someone that is going to be better than you, and to strive to be a better you than you were yesterday. All the pain and hard work you put in is worth it in the end to be a proud champion for those few special moments. During that infamous season when I played for the Pop Warner Colts our team was the third best team on the west coast. That year I had a season ending injury, I was speared with a helmet in my back. The doctors diagnosed a bruised bone. I was a fast, skinny kid who was afraid to get hurt again. I got scared, it took months to heal. My football career was done for the next six years. As I entered high school through my junior year, I grew over ten inches and put on approximately eighty pounds of muscle. This renewed my confidence to once again go back out on the field and have no regrets leaving high school. The summer before my senior year my passion had returned to lead me to the dream of playing football at the next level. Football taught me to want to feel that pain and that burn because that is your desire and if you have ambition for something then you can go beyond your imagination. I think that you need to have goals no matter what if you want to be successful. Even if it’s as little as waking up with a positive attitude every morning or as big as winning a super bowl, you have to have goals.

No matter who you are or what you do you are always going to be faced with obstacles. Nothing really comes easy in life whether its love, money, or fame. Sometimes it’s as simple as getting out of bed or as hard as a death of someone close, people are always being challenged. Over the short seventeen years that I’ve been alive, I’ve been faced with many big obstacles on my journey to success. The first big obstacle I was faced with was my freshman year. It was basketball season and on the day of my grandpa’s birthday I got told the news on my way home from practice that he had a massive heart attack and passed away earlier that day. When my dad first told me, I didn’t know what to think, I just wanted to think it was a joke. I thought to myself how could the man that I looked up to most second to my dad, leave me? All the fishing trips, boat rides that we shared together, all the birthday parties and family get togethers were now just memories. As time went on it got a little easier every day knowing that he was in a better place. A little over a year had passed when I got a call to come home immediately. When I got home my brother said that we need to go to the hospital because grandma had a stroke. As soon as those words came out of his mouth I knew that I had just lost both my grandparents. My grandma was the glue that held us all together. Holidays, birthdays, and Sunday dinners would forever be incomplete. That taught me that life was too short to just live within your shell and not take any risks. It taught me that you have to appreciate every second with the ones you love, and the things you love. I learned that you have to recognize the importance of what you love, and that’s what I’m doing with football.

In the end my priorities have always been and will always be my family, school, and friends, but my path has lead me back to the sport I love, football. No matter what you throw at me, I will give you my best effort and show that I can accomplish great things. I have goals to be the best student athlete that I can be, excelling just not only on the field but in the classroom working toward my degree and the beginning of a new chapter of my life. I can’t wait for what the future holds for me and for you.
